Step 2
Select the investment product you wish to purchase

Purchasing shares in a company buys you part ownership of that company. You're given the right to vote on who manages the company and receive a portion of company profits through the distribution of dividends.

Example: If a share price quote is $25, then that means one share is valued at $25.

Note: Shares are also referred to as stocks, equities and securities.

Is an abbreviation for "Contract for Difference". A CFD is a 'derivative' that is derived from the underlying value of the share price. A CFD’s allow you to go long (buy the CFD) or go short (sell the CFD).

CFD's give you leverage.

Example: Buying a CFD in XYZ provides you with an opportunity to purchase the shares at a variable rates such as 10 to 1 ratio instead of the full upfront share value cost i.e. paying $1,000 instead of $10,000.

Because CFDs are traded on margin, you must maintain the minimum margin level at all times.

Note: CFD’s are not recommended for novice traders.

General Overview

About Alcoa

Alcoa’s Australian operations represent the world’s largest integrated bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminium smelting system and therefore add value to Australia’s local, state and national economies at every stage.

Alcoa of Australia's operations support around 4,600 direct jobs, predominantly in regional Australia. These include:

  • Two bauxite mines in Western Australia (Huntly and Willowdale);
  • Three alumina refineries in Western Australia (Kwinana, Pinjarra and Wagerup);
  • One aluminium smelter in Victoria (Portland Aluminium; Point Henry Smelter closed in 2014);
  • Two dedicated port facilities in Western Australia (Kwinana and Bunbury);
  • A coal mine and power station in Victoria (Anglesea);
  • Three Alcoa Farmlands sites in Western Australia (Pinjarra, Wagerup and Boddington);
  • The Marrinup Nursery in Western Australia (for their WA mine site rehabilitation); and
  • Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline in Western Australia (20 per cent ownership).

Alcoa’s other operations in Australia are Alcoa Wheel Products Australia which distributes aluminium truck wheels and Alcoa Fastening Systems & Rings Australia which manufactures and distributes specialist fasteners.

Alcoa of Australia Limited is 60 per cent owned by Alcoa Inc. and 40 per cent by Alumina Limited.  Alcoa Wheel Products Australia and Alcoa Fastening Systems & Rings Australia are owned 100 per cent by Alcoa Inc.

Alcoa of Australia is part of the primary aluminium production business, with the process starting at the Huntly and Willowdale bauxite mines in the Darling Range south of Perth.  The Huntly Mine is the world’s largest bauxite mine.  These two mines supply bauxite to Alcoa’s alumina refineries at Kwinana, Pinjarra and Wagerup. The refineries extract alumina from the bauxite. Some of the alumina is exported, while the remainder is shipped to Alcoa’s smelter in Victoria.

Their aluminium smelter, Portland Aluminium in Portland, smelts alumina into aluminium ingots. Portland Aluminium is an unincorporated joint venture project between Alcoa of Australia Limited (45%) (Alcoa), Eastern Aluminium (Portland) Pty Ltd (10%) (EAPL), CITIC Nominees Pty Limited (22.5%) (Citic) and Marubeni Aluminium Australia Pty Ltd (22.5%)(Marubeni) (“Portland Joint Venture (PJV)”). Eastern Aluminium (Portland) Pty Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcoa of Australia Limited.  Alcoa Portland Aluminium Pty Ltd (Alcoa Portland) (also a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcoa) manages the smelter.

Their Victorian operations also include a coal mine and power station at Anglesea which supplied around 40% of the electricity needed to power the Point Henry Smelter (closed 2014).

In 2013, Alcoa of Australia mined 31.4 million bone dry metric tonnes of bauxite. Each year there is capacity to refine approximately nine million tonnes of alumina and produce 387,000 tonnes of aluminium.

Alcoa produces almost 45 per cent of Australia’s alumina and over 18 per cent of Australia’s aluminium. Their alumina production in Western Australia accounts for almost 10 per cent of total world demand.

Bauxite Mining

In 1961, the State Government and Alcoa entered into an agreement allowing Alcoa to mine and refine bauxite within a defined Mineral Lease on the Darling Range extending from east of Perth to Collie.

In 1994 the lease was reduced to 7,129 sq km to remove areas where bauxite mining would not occur. Alcoa does not mine in old growth forest. Alcoa’s first mine, at Jarrahdale, began operations in 1963 and for 35 years, until its closure in 1998, was the only source of bauxite for Alcoa’s alumina refinery at Kwinana.

Alcoa currently operates two bauxite mines within its Western Australian Mineral Lease. The Huntly mine, established in the early 1970s is located near Dwellingup and is the world’s largest bauxite mine, supplying bauxite ore to the Pinjarra and Kwinana Refineries. The Willowdale mine is located east of Waroona and supplies bauxite ore to the Wagerup Refinery.

The state agreement act and its subsequent amendments is the legislation under which Alcoa operates today. Alcoa’s operations are overseen by the Mining and Management Program Liaison Group (MMPLG), chaired by the Department of Industry and Resources, on behalf of the Minister for State Development, with representatives from the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC), the Department of Water (DoW). The MMPLG is responsible for reviewing mine plans and associated activities and making recommendations to the Minister for State Development.

Kwinana Refinery

Kwinana refinery is located 22 kilometres south of Perth and is part of the Kwinana Industrial area, Western Australia’s premier industrial estate.

Kwinana is also part of the Fremantle outer harbour with more than 120 ships berthing at the jetty. The Kwinana jetty imports approximately 12 ships of caustic soda for use at the Kwinana and Pinjarra refineries and exports approximately 115 ships of alumina each year.

Kwinana, the first of Alcoa’s three Western Australian alumina refineries, was officially opened in July 1963. Production began three months later. The first shipment of alumina left the Kwinana port aboard the 'Lake Sorrel' on 22 February 1964, bound for the Point Henry aluminium smelter. In March the same year, the first export shipment was despatched to Japan.

Kwinana Refinery enjoyed spectacular growth in its first decade of operation. By 1973, the original one-unit, 200,000 tonne plant expanded to a six-unit, one and a half million tonne operation. Over the years, the plant has been upgraded and improved and now produces two million tonnes from five-units.

Kwinana refinery’s annual production of alumina is the equivalent of either 15,000 jumbo jets, one billion recyclable drink cans or eight million four-metre dinghies.

Although 50 years old Kwinana refinery continues to make a considerable contribution to Alcoa’s international alumina operations, and the Western Australian economy.

Today, Kwinana employs about 1000 people plus a significant contractor workforce, with approximately 60 per cent of them living in the neighbouring townships of Kwinana, Cockburn and Rockingham.

Pinjarra Refinery

The Pinjarra Refinery is part of Alcoa of Australia's three-refinery system in Western Australia.

Situated just 10 minutes from the town of Pinjarra, located within the Shire of Murray, and 30 minutes from the coastal city of Mandurah, the Pinjarra Refinery is a major employer with over 1,000 employees.

It is one of the world’s largest refineries with a capacity of 4.2 million tonnes.

After undergoing a major upgrade, it now delivers a substantial reduction in energy intensity per tonne of alumina produced.

Combined with a co-generation partnership with Alinta, the refinery also now achieves significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in addition to improvements in the use of natural resources.

Wagerup Refinery

The Wagerup alumina refinery has been a part of the Western Australian community since it began operations in 1984. Located about 130km south of Perth, on the border of Western Australia’s Peel and South West regions, the refinery is four kilometres north of Yarloop and 13kms south of Waroona.

The refinery is surrounded by private agricultural land, is in close proximity to the Alcoa’s Willowdale bauxite mine in the Darling Range and 70kms from the Bunbury port.

Today the refinery has the capacity to produce 2.65 million tonnes of alumina from bauxite mined at Willowdale. This ore is transported by conveyor and refined to produce smelter grade alumina, which in turn is transported by rail to the Bunbury port for export to aluminium smelters around the world.

The Wagerup refinery is one of the most environmentally advanced alumina refineries in the world, with the application of advanced technology contributing.

In 2004 Alcoa announced a proposal to grow the capacity and efficiency of the refinery (commonly known as the Wagerup 3 expansion). This would increase production capacity to 4.7 million tonnes per year and increase Alcoa’s contribution to State revenue, and local communities. This project is current on hold.

Already for every dollar earned by Alcoa, 75 cents stays in Australia, contributing around $1 billion each year to WA’s economy. The Wagerup refinery spends more than $44 million in local communities each year.

Of the approximately 900 people employed at the Wagerup refinery and Willowdale mine, more than 30 per cent live in the local Shires of Waroona and Harvey.

In addition to investing in the local community through salaries, supply contracts, payments to government and dividends, Alcoa is making an investment in local businesses and training. Alcoa has trained over 1500 people through its apprentice program. This represents a more than $200 million investment in apprentice training for WA.

Alcoa’s three-refinery system in Western Australia, of which Wagerup is a part, is among the most technologically advanced in the world and has annual production of around 9 million tonnes of alumina.

Point Henry

Point Henry is home to two of Alcoa’s operations – the Point Henry Smelter and the Alcoa Australia Rolled Products plant.

Established in 1963, the smelter was one of the first plants in Australia to produce primary aluminium for domestic and international markets.  Today it has the rated capacity of 192,000 tonnes of aluminium per year.

Together, the Alcoa operated aluminium smelters at Point Henry and Portland produce approximately 25 per cent of Australia’s total aluminium production. As a result, Alcoa is one of Victoria’s largest exporters with overseas sales; equating to approximately five per cent of the State's exports.  In 2013, Point Henry exported $188 million worth of aluminium ingot and $160 million worth of rolled aluminium. Portland smelter exported aluminium valued at $649 million.

Approximately 45 per cent of the aluminium produced at the Point Henry smelter is sold to the neighbouring Alcoa Australia Rolled Products plant, where aluminium is rolled into sheet. The remainder of Point Henry’s aluminium is sold into north Asia (Japan, Korea and Taiwan).

Alcoa has been producing aluminium sheet at Point Henry since 1965, and today it has capacity for approximately 75,000mt of rolled aluminium each year producing the majority of domestic beverage can end-sheet.  Eighty per cent of its rolling capacity is dedicated to supplying the Asian market.

Alcoa Australia Rolled Products also operates a rolling mill at Yennora in Western Sydney, NSW which has the capacity for 125,000 tonnes of rolled aluminium per annum.

The Point Henry operations employ approximately 800 people in the Geelong region, 500 in the smelter and 300 in the rolling mill.

Alcoa’s Point Henry operations have been part of the local community for more than 40 years and are a proud contributor to many worthwhile community projects in Geelong and the surrounding district through their Partnering Stronger Communities Program.

Portland Aluminium

Set in a unique costal heathland just south of the city of Portland, the Portland Aluminium smelter is a joint venture project between Alcoa 55% (which manages the operations of the smelter), CITIC 22.5% and Marubeni 22.5%.

Production began at Portland Aluminium in 1986 and today the smelter produces approximately 358,000 tonnes of aluminium a year.  Alcoa is one of Victoria’s largest exporters with all of the aluminium produced at Portland Aluminium exported to the Asian market. Total exports equate to approximately $649 million per annum.

The Portland Aluminium smelter sits on approximately 600 hectares of land with the smelter operations, ancillary buildings and roads occupying 100 hectares. The remaining 500 hectares of this land has been transformed into wetlands and parklands, giving Portland Aluminium its status as the ‘Smelter in the Park’.  The ‘Smelter in the Park’ is recognised worldwide as a benchmark for industrial and environmental harmony and has been used as a model for some of Alcoa’s other facilities around the world.

Alcoa is committed to supporting the communities in which it operates. Since 2008, Portland Aluminium has invested more than $1 million in local partnerships and sponsorships.

The smelter provides more than 540 direct jobs, as well as a contractual workforce of approximately 180.  Portland Aluminium contributes $100 million in wages, $45 million in maintenance and contractor services and $7 million in council rates, royalties and community contributions into the Portland region each year.

Anglesea Power Station

In 1961, Alcoa World Alumina Australia was granted a 7,221 hectare mining lease known as the Anglesea Heath, on which they operate the Anglesea Power Station.

Every year, Alcoa Anglesea uses around 1.1 million tonnes of brown coal to generate electricity that is transmitted to the Point Henry plant via a 45km high-voltage line.

As a brown coal fired station, Alcoa Anglesea helps generate the 180,000 tonnes of aluminium produced per year at Point Henry aluminium smelter by providing approximately 41% of their total electricity needs.

Alcoa Anglesea, Parks Victoria, the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment, and the local community are working together to manage and protect the Anglesea Heath’s values.

Under this unique agreement, over 90% of the mining lease is co-managed by Alcoa and their partners as if it were a National Park. This is Australia’s first case where conservation agencies and an industry have come together to form a cooperative partnership to manage an area for conservation.

Alcoa Anglesea works hard to maintain its performance levels at the best possible rates whilst being active in the search to eliminate waste, conserve resources and reduce pollution.

Alcoa Anglesea is a major local employer; using a number of local contractors for specialised work and having strong links within the community.

Yennora Rolled Products & Recycling Facility

Yennora is home to Australia’s largest aluminium recycling facility, and an aluminium flat rolled products facility. The Yennora plant has operated at its site in Western Sydney, NSW for more than 40 years and has been part of the Alcoa Australia Rolled Products business since 1996.

Approximately 55,000 tonnes of scrap aluminium – including more than half a billion cans - is recycled at the Yennora recycling facility each year. Aluminium is 100 per cent recyclable, and the recycling process uses only 5 per cent of the energy needed to make new metal from scratch providing significant greenhouse benefits and diverting waste from landfill.

The Yennora facility produces approximately 125,000 tonnes of rolled aluminium each year for use in aluminium food and beverage cans. Approximately 30 per cent of Yennora’s rolled aluminium is exported, mainly to the growing Asian markets.

Alcoa Australia Rolled Products also operates a flat rolled products facility at Point Henry in Geelong, Victoria and together the two facilities produce a combined 150,000 tonnes of rolled product each year.

Alcoa Australia Rolled Products employs approximately 190 people at Yennora and spends more than $114 million in the Western Sydney and Geelong regions.
