Share

Purchasing shares in a company buys you part ownership of that company. You're given the right to vote on who manages the company and receive a portion of company profits through the distribution of dividends.

Example: If a share price quote is $25, then that means one share is valued at $25.

Note: Shares are also referred to as stocks, equities and securities.

CFD

Is an abbreviation for "Contract for Difference". A CFD is a 'derivative' that is derived from the underlying value of the share price. A CFD’s allow you to go long (buy the CFD) or go short (sell the CFD).

CFD's give you leverage.

Example: Buying a CFD in XYZ provides you with an opportunity to purchase the shares at a variable rates such as 10 to 1 ratio instead of the full upfront share value cost i.e. paying $1,000 instead of $10,000.

Because CFDs are traded on margin, you must maintain the minimum margin level at all times.

Note: CFD’s are not recommended for novice traders.

General Overview

About ANTAM

ANTAM is a vertically integrated, export-oriented, diversified mining and metals company. With operations spread throughout the mineral-rich Indonesian archipelago, ANTAM undertakes all activities from exploration, excavation, processing through to marketing of nickel ore, ferronickel, gold, silver, bauxite and coal. The company has long term loyal blue chip customers in Europe and Asia. Due to the vastness of the company's licensed exploration areas as well as its known large holdings of high quality reserves and resources, ANTAM has formed several joint ventures with international partners to profitably develop geological ore bodies into profitable mines.

The company generates healthy cash flows, and has prudent capital management. The company became a limited liability state-controlled company in 1968 with the merger of several single commodity mining companies. In 1997, the company conducted an initial public offering (IPO) and listed its shares on the Indonesia Stock Exchange and 35% were sold by the government to the public, to raise money for a ferronickel expansion. In 1999, ANTAM listed its shares in Australia as a foreign exempt entity and then in 2002 augmented its status to the more stringent ASX Listing.

Objective

Their main objective is to enhance shareholder value by lowering costs while profitably expanding operations in a sustainable manner.

Mission

  • To provide high quality products with a view of achieving maximum added value through best industry practices and competitive operational performance
  • To optimize resources with emphasis on sustainability, occupational safety and environmental conservation
  • To maximize the shareholder and stakeholder value
  • To improve the employee's competency and welfare as well as the independency of the communities In the vicinity of the operational areas

Vision

"To be a leading natural resources based global corporation through business diversification and integration"

Corporation

A Holding entity with a view of delivering added value to the stakeholders

A Leading Global Entity
  • Global marketing reach
  • World class standard operational performance
  • Indonesia's largest mineral processing company
Business Diversification and Integration
  • Having a diversified business with prudent management and horizontal business development
  • Integrated business from upstream to downstream
Natural Resources Based
  • Natural resources management with a view of creating added value to the main commodities and supporting businesses
  • Main commodities: Nickel, bauxite and gold based products
  • Supporting businesses: energy, coal, exploration services, refining services, trading, engineering, operations and management, transshipment, training centre and plantation.

Strategy

Their strategy is to focus on their core business. They ask themselves, “how can we generate the most value from their reserves?” They build on their existing strengths to ensure long term profitability. By maximizing output they increase cash generation and lower unit costs.

They sustain growth through reliable expansion projects, strategic alliances, acquisitions, increasing quality reserves and adding value by moving away from selling raw materials and increasing processing activities.

They maintain financial strength. By generating as much cash as possible they ensure they have the funds to repay their debts, finance their continued growth and pay dividends.

Environment

As a mining company, ANTAM realizes its operations have a direct impact on the surrounding environment and nearby communities.

Environmental sustainability and community development are not viewed merely as being socially responsible, but also as risk management.

The characteristic of mining in Indonesia is that it plays a big role in the development of remote areas and so given the mine's large role in community development it is crucial to operate not as an outsider but as a member of the community and a good corporate citizen and thereby reduce the likelihood of business interruptions.

ANTAM believes environmental sustainability and proactive community development are necessary to successfully operate a mine.

Serious attention to natural conservation efforts and proactive participation in community development are one of the keys to successful mining activities.

History

Incorporated in 1968, ANTAM was a state owned company resulting from a merger of several state-owned mining companies and projects, namely the State General Mining Company, the State Bauxite Mining Company, the Tjikotok State Gold Mining Company, the State Precious Metals Company, PT Nickel Indonesia, the Diamond Project and other projects under the Bapetamb. Under the Government Regulation No. 22/1968, the Company was established as Perusahaan Negara (PN) Aneka Tambang on July 5, 1968. The establishment was announced in the Appendix No. 36, BNRI No. 56, dated July 5, 1968. On September 14, 1974, the Company's status was changed from State Company to State-owned (Persero) and known as "Perusahaan Perseroan (Persero) Aneka Tambang".

The Company was changed into Limited Liability Company on December 30, 1974, as stated in the Deed of Incorporation No. 320 dated December 30, 1974 prepared before Warda Sungkar Alurmei S.H., who was at that time in lieu Abdul Latief, by then a notary in Jakarta. Deed of Amendment No. 55 dated March 14, 1975 was made in the presence of Abdul Latief, by then a notary in Jakarta, on the Company's status change in order to implement the provisions in the Law No. 9/1969 on Stipulation of Government Regulation in lieu of Law No. 1/1969 (Statute Book of 1969 No. 16, Supplement to Statute Book No. 2890) on forms of State-run Businesses into Law (Statute Book of the Republic of Indonesia of 1969 No. 40), Government Regulation No. 12/1969 on State Limited Liability Companies, Statute Book of the Republic of Indonesia of 1969 No. 21 and Government Regulation No. 26/1974 on the form conversion of state company Aneka Tambang into Limited Liability Company, Statute Book of Republic of Indonesia of 1974 number 33 jo. Decree of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia No. Kep. 1768/MK/IV/12/1974, on the Determination of Capital of Perusahaan Perseroan (Persero) PT Aneka Tambang as a Limited Liability Company under the name of PT Aneka Tambang, which had been approved by the Minister of Law and Human Rights Decree No. Y.A. 5/170/4 dated May 21, 1975, and both of the above Deeds were registered in the Registry book at the Jakarta District Court No. 1736 and No. 1737 dated May 27, 1975 and published in the Supplement No. 312 of BNRI No. 52 dated July 1, 1975. The Company launched an Initial Public Offering by selling 35% of its shares to the public and listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 1997. The fund raised from the IPO was used to support ferronickel project III expansion. Two years later, the Company listed its shares in Australia under foreign exempt entity status, which was upgraded in 2002 into ASX Listing, which had stronger provisions.

Products

Nickel Ore / Ferronickel

ANTAM's nickel ore si divided into saprolite nickel ore and limonite nickel ore. Limonite nickel ore is low grade nickel laterite ore containing between 0.8% - 1.5% nickel, 25%-35% iron and a trace of cobalt. Limonite rests atop saprolite and is cheaper and easier to mine. Saprolite nickel ore is formed beneath the limonite zone. It contains generally 1.5 - 2.5% nickel and is considered high-grade nickel laterite ore. Using a pyrometallurgical process, saprolite is used as the raw materials for the production of ferronickel.

One of the main products of ANTAM, it is produced high grade nickel ore using pyrometallurgical technology. ANTAM's ferronickel consist of about 20% nickel and 80% iron. Sold in the form of shots and pellets, either with high or low carbon content, Ferronickel is used as the feed materials for stainless steel production.

One of ANTAM's core strategies is to move downstream to produce higher added value processed products. The processed product currently produced by ANTAM in its nickel business line is ferronickel, which contains about 80% iron and 20% nickel. ANTAM's ferronickel, which is differentiated as containing high or low carbon levels, is sold in the form of shots (pellets) to stainless steel producers mainly in Europe and Korea. About 70% of nickel is consumed for the production of stainless steel, while the rest is used for various industrial purposes such as batteries, electronics, aerospace applications and land based gas turbines.

To produce ferronickel, saprolite nickel ore – which contain minimum 1.8% nickel and maximum 25% iron - were first treated to become calcine through a process that crushes, dries, heats and adds certain consumables to reduce acidity, using various machines. The treated nickel ore are then fed into ANTAM's smelters at a ratio of about 70-80 tonnes of nickel ore – depending on the grade of the nickel ore - for every tonne of nickel contained in ferronickel. This heat base phyrometallurgical technology is extremely energy intensive and requires an assured power source.

There are three ferronickel plants owned by ANTAM: the FeNi I, FeNi II and FeNi III. The total capacity of the three plants is 26,000 TNi with an assumption of peak load of 42MW and using nickel ore with 2.38% content as feed. Nevertheless, for reserves conservation, the Company usually uses ore feed with content range between 1.8% and 2.0% and with peak load around 38 MW-40 MW, so the approximated total production of the three ferronickel plants is 18,000 – 20,000 TNi.

Gold / Silver

Gold is a bright yellow, dense, soft, shiny, the most malleable and ductile of known metals and highly resistant to oxidative corrosion. Gold is a highly sought-after precious metal which, for many centuries, has been used as money, a store of value and in jewellery. The metal occurs as nuggets or grains in rocks, underground “veins" and in alluvial deposits. Modern industrial uses include dentistry and electronics. ANTAM produces gold from its Pongkor and Cibaliung mines with combined annual output of around 5 tons per year.

Silver is a soft, bright white, lustrous metal that has long been valued as precious metal used to make ornaments, jewellery, high-value tableware and utensils and currency coins. It has the highest electrical conductivity of any element and the highest thermal conductivity of any metal. It occurs as a pure free metal and alloyed with gold, as well as in various minerals. Most silver is produced as a by-product of gold, copper, lead and zinc mining. ANTAM produces silver as a by product of gold from its Pongkor and Cibaliung mines.

ANTAM's Precious Metal Refinery, Logam Mulia, refines the dore bullion from Pongkor and Cibaliung into fine gold as well as fine silver as the by-product of the refinery process. Logam Mulia's fine gold and fine silver products are in accordance with international standard purity of 999.9 of gold and 999.5 of silver respectively and are certified by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA).

ANTAM's precious metal refinery, Logam Mulia has the capacity to produce 60 ton (1.9 million toz) of internationally accredited gold per year and 250 ton (8 million toz) of internationally accredited silver per year. Besides refining ANTAM's own dore bullion from Pongkor and Cibaliung, Logam mulia also provides refining services to third parties, which contribute to more than half of Logam Mulia's income.

Bauxite

Bauxite is the main source of ore alumunium production. Bauxite contains 30-54% alumina (AI203) and a mixture of silica, various iron oxides, and titanium dioxide. ANTAM plans to augment the value of its bauxite reserves though the development of alumina projects.

Bauxite, the raw material for the production of alumina, was first discovered in 1924 at Kijang, Bintan Island, in the province of Riau, in northwestern Indonesia. Bauxite from Bintan Island has been mined and exported since 1935. In 1968 ANTAM acquired the mine. Thus, ANTAM is Indonesia's longest running producer of bauxite. ANTAM exports the bauxite to alumina producers in Japan and China.

Following the closure of the Kijang bauxite mine in 2009, ANTAM is currently developing two alumina projects to further add value to its vast bauxite reserves in Kalimantan. As of December 31, 2012, ANTAM has 108.8 million wmt of bauxite reserves and 365 million wmt of resources in Tayan, Mempawah and Munggu Pasir, all are located in Kalimantan.

Coal

ANTAM, through its subsidiary PT Indonesia Coal Resources, produces coal from the Sarolangun coal mine located in Jambi Province, Indonesia. The Non-JORC coal reserves currently stands at 8.25 million tons with the average value of 5,300 until 5,500 Kcal/kg. ANTAM currently sells its coal to the export as well as domestic markets.

ANTAM's Sarolangun coal mine is an open pit mine. Mining is conducted through separation between dirt and the rock with explosives. The overbudern rock is then transported using excavator and trucks. After the coal layer is seen, it is then split and nmined using excavator for further transportation using truck.

Projects

Nickel Ore Mining

Nickel ore is one of ANTAM's important products. ANTAM produces and exports high grade nickel ore with a minimum 1.8% nickel content and a maximum 25% iron content (saprolite) and low grade nickel ore with a 1.2% minimum nickel content (limonite) and minimum 25% iron content.

ANTAM has approximately 361.3 million wet metric tons (wmt) of saprolite reserves and resources and 464 million wmt of limonite resources which could last for many decades at current extraction rates. While ANTAM has more than enough ore to support its current long term nickel expansion plans, in order to prolong the life of its own reserves, ANTAM may seek third party ores to supplement its own supply.

ANTAM's nickel ore mines are at Pomalaa, Tanjung Buli and Tapunopaka. Pomalaa, Southeast Sulawesi, is ANTAM's oldest nickel mine and is nearly depleted. Tapunopaka is ANTAM's newest mine, located in Southeast Sulawesi. Tanjung Buli nickel mine is located in North Maluku.

ANTAM's nickel deposits are typically shallow. The limonite rests atop the saprolite, is cheaper to mine and the first to be extracted followed by the saprolite. The ores usually can be easily mined and extracted using an open pit mining techniques using simple truck and shovel operations. No drilling or blasting is required. Little beneficiation is required other than drying and screening and sometimes limited crushing of oversize material. In particular, the lower part of the saprolite ore is often lumpy and requires crushing to reduce it to the required size specifications.

Historically ANTAM extracts between 5-9 million wmt of nickel ores annually. However, ANTAM can easily ramp up extraction levels if necessary. Since 2006, ANTAM's annual production has increased substantially due to strong demand. Some portion of ANTAM's saprolite production is used as feedstock to produce ferronickel, however the majority of saprolites are mainly exported to Japan and to Europe. Limonites were previously entirely sold to Australia but since 2007 it has been exported mainly to China.

Gold Mining

ANTAM's main gold and silver production is sourced from its underground gold mines at Pongkor, West Java and Cibaliung, Banten. Indications of gold deposits at Pongkor were discovered by ANTAM's Geology Unit in 1981, and production commenced in May 1994 after ANTAM secured the mining license in 1992. The Cibaliung gold mine was acquired in 2009 from an Australian company, Arc Exploration and began to operate in 2010. The Cibaliung mine is operated by ANTAM's subsidiary, PT Cibaliung Sumberdaya. ANTAM also owns 25% of PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals which operates the Gosong mine in North Maluku. At the beginning of June 2013 ANTAM received an extension of forest borrow and use license for Pongkor gold mine until 2021.

The Pongkor mine has three primary veins of gold: Ciguha, Kubang Cicau and Ciurug. A conventional cut and fill stoping mining method is used for the first two of these veins. A mechanised cut and fill method, with hydraulic jumbo drill and load haul dump (LHD), was introduced in 2000 for the third vein, Ciurug. The use of mechanised cut and fill is intended not only to assist in meeting the increased production targets but also to lower overall production costs and to improve efficiency. Meanwhile, the Cibaliung mine is operated with a combination of mechanised cut and fill and undercut and fill mining methods. The gold ore at Pongkor and Cibaliung goes through various processes which include crushing, milling, cyanidation, carbon leaching and stripping, electro winning to melting and casting to produce bullion/ dore. The waste is processed at the detoxification plant to reduce the cyanide content of tailings to below the threshold limit value of 0.5 ppm, so that it can be safely used as a total tailing backfill system in combination with cement.

As of December 31, 2012, ANTAM's gold reserves and resources amount to 9.4 million dmt with contained gold metal of 1.6 million ounces. Meanwhile, As of December 31, 2012, the Gosowong mine has 9.3 million dmt gold reserves and resources with contained gold metal of 3.6 million ounces.

The dore/bullion from Pongkor and Cibaliung is then sent by armored vehicle to ANTAM's precious metals refinery, Logam Mulia, located in Jakarta. Please refer to the section Precious Metal Refining for further information on ANTAM's precious metal refining operation.
