General Overview

About Australasian Wealth Investments Limited

AWI is an investment company listed on the ASX and focused on the financial services sector. AWI will hold equity stakes (up to 100%) in operating businesses in four core thematics: digital distribution; research & information; funds management; and trustee & super services. AWI will also invest selectively in early stage businesses through AWI Ventures where these businesses complement our core operating businesses.

Each of their businesses will operate under distinct brands rather than a single corporate identity. AWI expects to take advantage of new technology and disruptive product & service innovation in its various businesses and investments.

History

AWI was listed as the Fat Prophets Australia Fund – a 'listed investment company' – on 21 April 2005. At inception, the Company invested passively in a portfolio of ASX300 stocks.

In March 2010, the Fat Prophets Australia Fund was renamed the Merrick Special Opportunities Fund and it pursued a concentrated investment strategy.

In April 2013, Andrew Barnes (today the Chairman of the Company) took over the management of the Company and committed to pursue a new strategy to identify and acquire opportunities in the the financial services sector. These opportunities are driven by regulatory changes in the industry, the ongoing trend towards self-directed investing, and the accelerating scale of intergenerational wealth transfer.

Following this change of management, the Company was been renamed (Australasian Wealth Investments Limited); it unwound its LIC structure (formally approved by shareholders in November 2013) and appointed senior executives to its management team; and it began investing in the financial services sector. Given the platform that is now in place at AWI, and the macro environment in which the Company competes, the future is bright for the Company.

AWI Ventures

AWI Ventures invests in digital finance industry startups with a particular interest in direct-to-consumer wealth management services.

AWI Ventures holds typically minority stakes in early stage, growing businesses that have the potential to become successful and substantial enterprises and potentially valuable partners for core AWI businesses.

To foster genuine innovation in the digital financial services industry, AWI Ventures has launched a startup accelerator program (see below).

This is the only financial services focused accelerator in Australia and one of the first in the world.
