About Bluglass Limited

The RPCVD Revolution

Welcome to BluGlass. We are an Australian clean technology company that is developing and commercialising a breakthrough semiconductor technology called remote plasma chemical vapour deposition (RPCVD), for the production of high efficiency devices such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) and concentrated solar cells.

RPCVD has several potential advantages over current manufacturing techniques promising higher performing devices and a cleaner, lower temperature and lower cost method of manufacture.

The Blueglass Story

BLGIn 2009, BluGlass established a wholly owned subsidiary; BluSolar Pty Ltd to explore the potential of applying its proprietary technology for the development of high efficiency nitride based solar cells. Based on the emerging solar material indium gallium nitride (InGaN), research suggests that InGaN solar cells have the potential to convert almost the full spectrum of sunlight to electrical power. InGaN solar cells promise to be long lasting, relatively inexpensive and importantly, the most efficient ever created. BluGlass will be looking to demonstrate this proof of principle using its RPCVD technology.

In 2010, SPP Process Technology Systems (SPTS) a then subsidiary of Sumitomo Precision Products (TYO: 6355), became a cornerstone investor acquiring a 19.9% stake in BluGlass Limited. The two companies also entered into a joint venture agreement to continue the development of the RPCVD process and equipment. The joint venture was successfully concluded in October 2012 following the production of high quality crystalline GaN grown at low temperatures using RPCVD. SPTS continue to provide marketing support for the RPCVD technology and remain involved with the company both as a collaborator and a strategic investor with a current holding of 22.45%.

In November 2012 BluGlass achieved its proof of concept milestone, producing n-GaN films grown at low temperature using RPCVD that met industry electrical performance benchmarks. This was a breakthrough achievement critical to proving the value of a low temperature technology to the industry.

BluGlass is now focused on taking the research into the next phase and working on device performance of LEDs to prove that low temperature p-GaN will improve the performance and light output of an LED.

The company is now well positioned to take its recent results and data to leading participants in the LED industry to begin the process of commercialising the technology. BluGlass and its shareholders share a vision of RPCVD becoming a key technology in the production of energy efficient devices such as LEDs and CPV solar cells.

The Environmental Impact

BLGMuch of Australia's climate change debate is focused on 'generation side management' - ways to reduce emissions from electricity generation such as clean coal, solar, wind and geothermal sources.

However, the first approach usually advocated in addressing climate change is 'demand side management' - reducing current energy usage. This is typically described as the 'cheapest megawatt hour is the one we don't use' or the 'cleanest power station' is the one we don't build.

One of the key values of the BluGlass technology is that it could become a significant force in the reduction of greenhouse gases in Australia and the world. At BluGlass they believe that both sides of the energy debate require action and attention in order to sustain both economic growth and environmental amenity.

Their unique RPCVD technology aims to help reduce the amount of electricity used in lighting significantly (demand side management) as well as bringing to market large scale, cost effective renewable energy from the sun (generation side management).

LEDs for the Environment
  • Their unique process has the potential to improve LED performance and cost of manufacture while at the same time but also uses a more environmentally benign process free of the highly toxic ammonia
  • Globally it is estimated that LEDs could save 30% of the electricity used in general lighting
  • Their Sydney based pilot plant is designed as an environmentally safe facility capable of manufacturing semiconductor materials and meeting all of their R&D goals
  • LEDs do not contain the extremely harmful substance, mercury, found in CFLs and are safe to dispose of at the end of their long life
  • Once LEDs replace inefficient current technologies such as incandescent bulbs and environmentally harmful technologies such as CFLs, much less electricity will be required to light their lives. Less energy consumption directly equates to less greenhouse gas production in the atmosphere
  • It is estimated that if LEDs were installed for lighting around the globe, it would alleviate the need for 133 nuclear power stations
CPV for the Environment
  • Their unique process has the potential to bring high efficiency InGaN solar cells to commercial reality due to its low temperature manufacturing advantages
  • Concentrated photovoltaics (CPV) promises large scale, high efficiency renewable energy from the sun that addresses many of the concerns that have limited the success of solar energy in the past
  • CPV uses less semiconductor material than conventional solar technologies. CPV uses mirror or lens technology to concentrate a large area of sunlight onto a smaller area of material to concrentrate the sunlight up to several hundred times
  • CPV is less land intensive than other solar technologies and is suitable for marginal land applications where direct nominal irradiance (DNI) is high or extreme
  • CPV does not require water cooling during energy generation
  • CPV can be installed closer to end use areas than other fossil fuel and renewable energy generation techniques and reduce infrastructure requirement and costs
  • InGaN solar cells offer additional advantages of durability and long life and can withstand extreme radiation suitable for space applications to also increase satellite lifetime
  • All of these advantages can lead to dramatically reduced energy generation costs and allow significantly more sustainable energy generation

The RPCVD Revolution - A Platform Technology

The technology being developed and commercialised by BluGlass is a process for manufacturing semiconductor materials for high efficiency devices such as LEDs and concentrated solar cells for utility scale solar.

This process, uses remote plasma chemical vapour deposition (RPCVD) and the potential to offer many advantages over current manufacturing techniques.

Evolved from more than 15 years of low temperature thin film growth research at Sydney's Macquarie University, the RPCVD process has been specifically developed for the low temperature growth of nitride based thin films, such as gallium nitride (GaN) and indium gallium nitride (InGaN).

Currently a process called MOCVD is the most widely used in the production of high brightness LEDs. This process requires much higher growth temperatures of typically up to 1200°C.

With a lower growth temperature than MOCVD, RPCVD has the potential to allow electronics manufacturers to create higher performing devices at lower cost while also being friendlier to the environment.

The BluGlass IP portfolio now comprises 17 patents accepted or granted in key semiconductor area's including Japan, China, Europe and the USA.

The RPCVD process is potentially suited to a range of applications including:

    RPCVD offers LED manufacturers many potential benefits.

    The bulk of commercial LEDs are today made using a process commonly called MOCVD (metal organic chemical vapour deposition). MOCVD is a highly complex process that is used to deposit very thin layers of atoms onto a substrate to produce important compound semiconductor materials such as gallium nitride (GaN).

    GaN is now an important material used in light-emitting diodes (LEDs), lasers, transistors, electronic and opto-electronic devices.

    BluGlass has invented a process using remote plasma chemical vapour deposition (RPCVD), which is also a chemical vapour deposition (CVD) process, but one that offers unique advantages over the MOCVD platforms of today.

    In order to explain how RPCVD is a beneficial approach to CVD, it is helpful to understand some of the basics of the incumbent technology.

    How MOCVD Works

    MOCVD is a method used to deposit (grow) semiconductor films onto a substrate (wafer). When producing gallium nitride (GaN), organometallic compounds are reacted with ammonia inside a deposition chamber. This gas mixture is precisely delivered to a heated substrate (up to approximately 1,200°C).

    The precursor molecules undergo pyrolysis (thermal decomposition) leaving the desired atoms, e.g. Ga and N available for growth. These atoms bond at the surface and crystalline layers of GaN are formed in neatly stacked layers.

    Blusolar - Nitride CPV

    BluSolar is a wholly owned subsidiary of BluGlass Limited, established to explore and commercialise an exciting breakthrough in the solar industry. BluSolar is working towards the development of a nitride solar cell using BluGlass' patented manufacturing technology, remote plasma chemical vapour deposition (RPCVD) based manufacturing technology.

    Although there are many materials from which solar cells can be developed, there is an emerging material family with the potential to convert almost the full spectrum of sunlight – from the infrared, visible and ultraviolet – to electrical power. This material family is BluGlass' area of expertise – group III nitrides.

    Indium gallium nitride (InGaN) semiconductors have many advantages over current materials making them an exciting prospect for new high efficiency solar cell applications.

    InGaN solar cells have the potential to be long lasting, relatively inexpensive and importantly the most efficient ever created.

    This potential comes from the fact that InGaN has a direct band gap with wide tunability. These properties potentially allow more energy from the solar spectrum to be captured efficiently into the cell and converted to power. Research has stated that InGaN solar cells could produce efficiencies of more than 50% which would be a major breakthrough in solar cell efficiency far exceeding what is available today.

    BluGlass' RPCVD process has great potential to grow high indium content InGaN when compared to MOCVD due to its low temperature process.
