Share

Purchasing shares in a company buys you part ownership of that company. You're given the right to vote on who manages the company and receive a portion of company profits through the distribution of dividends.

Example: If a share price quote is $25, then that means one share is valued at $25.

Note: Shares are also referred to as stocks, equities and securities.

CFD

Is an abbreviation for "Contract for Difference". A CFD is a 'derivative' that is derived from the underlying value of the share price. A CFD’s allow you to go long (buy the CFD) or go short (sell the CFD).

CFD's give you leverage.

Example: Buying a CFD in XYZ provides you with an opportunity to purchase the shares at a variable rates such as 10 to 1 ratio instead of the full upfront share value cost i.e. paying $1,000 instead of $10,000.

Because CFDs are traded on margin, you must maintain the minimum margin level at all times.

Note: CFD’s are not recommended for novice traders.

History

Sometimes you don't know what you need until it's there.

When David Coffey saw the potential for geotechnical engineering in the 1950s, it was a little understood discipline rarely used in Australia. It was a pioneering profession, yet to make inroads in this growing country.

Seeing its value, David travelled to Canada where he lived and worked, honing his craft and building his skills as a geotechnical engineer.

Returning to Australia in 1959 to start his own business from his Sydney home, he launched Australia's first geotechnical engineering firm. Coffey was born, bringing innovation and insight to projects throughout Sydney.

Coffey been breaking new ground since the very beginning.

It took just four years for Coffey to lead the market, edging out competitors that had arrived from overseas. By the mid-1960s, they were working across Australia and continuing to grow.

In the 1970s, Coffey ventured overseas, creating new opportunities for the company. But it was during the 1980s that Coffey really expanded. New work saw them grow, while strong financial management ensured stability. Their offices in Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok were opened and the future looked bright.

In 1990, Coffey International Limited was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.

Coffey spent the following decade steadily growing as they transitioned from a private to public company and further developed their reputation for technical excellence. In the early 2000s, they embarked on a range of acquisitions, diversifying the company beyond its traditional origins. Coffey were now involved in more industries than ever before – all over the world.

Later, the Global Financial Crisis saw the need to re-focus Coffey business. New Managing Director John Douglas streamlined the business to focus on its three core areas of geoservices, project management and international development to support its sustainable growth.

Now, more than 50 years after it began, Coffey employs about 4000 people right across the globe. They are delivering smart solutions for their clients – and providing the innovation and insight that comes from a proud history of delivery.

Industry

International Development

In an increasingly global world helping to reduce poverty and improving lives is everyone’s concern.

Delivering complex projects in regions faced with these challenges requires very particular expertise. Projects need to be mobilised quickly and managed flexibly and efficiently, and local stakeholders must be part of the entire process.

Sustainable Solutions

Their clients in the public and private sector call on Coffey to help find sustainable solutions to international development challenges. Whether they are helping Colombia, Indonesia or Pakistan improve the delivery of basic services or helping improve income opportunities for the poor in Nigeria, their team has the expertise to achieve value for their clients and in-country recipients.

Coffey bring extensive experience and understanding of what has worked to each and every project. As a result, they are able to work effectively in even the most challenging security and political environments.

Their team works closely with international and local organisations to deliver projects. They are trusted partners to their clients, including the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Commitment to Effective International Development

Coffey bring a robust monitoring and evaluation approach to their programs to ensure the best development outcomes. With their support, projects and local organisations are equipped with practical tools to monitor the progress of their work and make changes when required so they can achieve results.

And Coffey measure development effectiveness. They conducted more than 600 evaluations for clients such as the European Commission, DFID, the US Department of State and USAID. The evaluations help donors learn lessons they can apply to future policies and programs, while evidence of what works and what doesn’t can be shared more broadly, so that the best ideas and practices are emulated.

Oil & Gas

To meet the surging global demand for energy, the oil and gas industry is going through a period of transformation.

Changes in technology have opened new markets and geographies; and as many major new projects come on line, the global market has never been more competitive. Changing market conditions, schedule and CAPEX control, as well as increasing regulatory pressures, are key challenges facing the industry. And as stakeholders increase their interest in ongoing operations and new projects, managing your social license has never been more important. All of this is required whilst improving safety, and delivering improved transparency and reporting to shareholders. There’s a lot to do.

Having worked on a significant number of oil and gas projects globally, they have an applied understanding of the challenges facing the industry today and can provide tested solutions to help you manage these issues into the future.

Coffey provide solutions to both the upstream and downstream market. Upstream, their specialists will manage your environmental and social risk, helping you to build your social license to operate. They will also provide trusted and experienced geotechnical advice to get your design right and construction control testing to prevent delays and expensive maintenance. Downstream, they will provide outcome driven site assessment and remediation services to optimise land value. And right across the value chain, their workplace health and safety specialists implement programs to protect the health and safety of your workforce – your most valued asset.

Property

New properties can’t just meet the demands of today. They need to stand the test of time and deliver value over the long-term. Property developers require new thinking and improved approaches to stay at the forefront of the industry.

Tomorrow’s living, work and play areas require collaboration from all involved in the development process. The vast majority of projects which fail to achieve their time, cost and quality objectives either lacked proper project planning and controls or were poorly implemented and managed.

Their expert team of project managers, environmental consultants, geotechnical engineers and testers are working with their clients and the industry to find smarter solutions to get projects off the ground, and on track for sustainable success.

At Coffey they understand the many complexities and risks inherent within a property development project, including design methodologies; local ground conditions; stakeholder consultation; project approvals; construction, commissioning and handover sequencing and project programs that reflect reality.

As specialist and independent project managers, they will manage the procurement of these facilities from inception to completion.

Transport Infrastructure

Safe, efficient and sustainable transport infrastructure is important for any country around the world. Funding and constructing transport infrastructure projects can be complex and risky. They are often built on challenging and sensitive environments and over unexpected geotechnical conditions.

Whether it’s rural or urban roads, freight or passenger rail, commercial ports and airports or small regional or private operations – they have worked on transport infrastructure projects around the globe. Providing practical, cost effective and timely solutions to their clients.

Projects

Effluent Storage Tank Foundations

Client name: Van Vugt Brothers Limited

Duration: April 2014 – June 2014

Location: Piako Road, Hamilton, New Zealand

Coffey’s geotechnical investigation analysis determined the most cost effective foundation design solution to reduce the risk of failure and ensure the long term viability of the structure.

Situation

Their client needed to assess foundation construction design requirements to support a 3.5 million litre capacity effluent tank to support their building consent application.

Testing and logging of the subsoil revealed challenging soil conditions consisting of soft peat to 1.7m below ground level. This was underlain by a narrow clay layer and then sand. Groundwater was encountered below the clay layer, adding to the project’s complexity. Additional liquefaction analysis assessed the suitability of the foundation design in response to an extreme event. Should any undermining of the deeper subsoils occur this could lead to different rates of settlement, leading to structural failure.

Solution

Coffey analysed the geotechnical data in combination with the tank design parameters. This showed the ground conditions would be susceptible to settlement under heavy loads, and a detailed engineering design was required.

They gave their client a range of design options using different methodologies to ensure they could make an informed selection.

Throughout the course of the foundation construction, they provided inspections and advice to ensure design specifications were met and consent would be granted.

Result

A perimeter foundation design to support the areas of maximum loading was determined to be the best solution. Existing peat was removed and replaced with compacted brown rock to limit the amount of earthworks reduce overall costs.

Following the acceptance of the building consent, they provided construction inspections to deliver a Producer Statement certifying the construction works.

Economic and Public Sector Program

Client name: Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)

Duration: 2012 - ongoing

Location: Asia Pacific, Papua New Guinea

Coffey manages the Economic and Public Sector Program for Papua New Guinea, on behalf of the Australian Government. The program applies innovative solutions to tackle development challenges.

Situation

Papua New Guinea is rich in resources, but still has high levels of people living in poverty. Creating a vibrant economy and equitable society to improve the quality of life for children, women and men is an ongoing challenge.

Debate and discussion of issues is widely accepted as a cultural norm in Papua New Guinea. But making sure they are held at decision-maker level and heard among the broader population in order to influence lasting change is vital.

With a long and close working relationship, the Australian and Papua New Guinean governments are committed towards the goal of development for PNG. Tanim Graun – a televised development debate – is one example of that partnership.

Solution

Tanim Graun, or ‘turn the earth’, is a question and answer style television program exploring topical and timely issues dealing with development challenges in PNG. The program canvasses a range of topics and views through discussion and debate.

Guests from politics, media and business answer questions posed by members of the public, providing an opportunity for a collective voice for PNG citizens

An extensive amount of research and consultation goes into selecting themes for Tanim Graun to ensure that they resonate with and engage the public. Recent topics have included:

PNG’s Youth Entrepreneurs - the role that young entrepreneurs are playing in contributing to the development of PNG, both economically and socially along with the barriers and constraints that entrepreneurs face when starting and operating businesses in PNG.

Improving Government revenue transparency - the need for effective and transparent revenue management policies and processes to support PNG’s economic development.

Is tourism the future? - looking beyond the resources boom and the possibility of building a sustainable tourism industry in PNG that delivers economic benefits as widely as possible.

Overcoming housing affordability - the challenges of urban and rural housing in PNG and how these might be overcome.

Result

Tanim Graun airs on EMTV during prime viewing time each Sunday, and attracts an audience of two million people, or around a third of PNG’s population.

The program is achieving excellent community engagement, and is succeeding in connecting decision-makers and government with the private and not-for-profit sectors in a public forum. Through this forum, the people of PNG are encouraged to influence discussion and debate about their future.

Tanim Graun also:

  • Promotes discussion and awareness on national and regional issues that affect PNG governance
  • Establishes networks and relationships across and between the Government of PNG agencies, the Australian Government and other development partners
  • Raises awareness of major private sector/NGO initiatives that will have an impact on government policy and programs

The Economic and Public Sector Program for Papua New Guinea, which encompasses Tanim Graun, is managed by Coffey on behalf of the Australian Government.

Evaluating an EU Campaign to Reduce the Gender Pay Gap

Client name: European Commission (EC) - Directorate General for Justice

Duration: 2011-2012

Location: European Union

Situation

The European Commission’s (EC’s) communication campaign on the gender pay gap was launched in 2009 to help reduce the pay gap in the EU from persistent levels of 17%. The primary objective of the campaign was to raise awareness of the pay gap amongst women, businesses and citizens in general. To do this, the campaign used a number of communication channels and tools including print and online advertising, the media, a website, event support and partnership building.

Coffey was commissioned to provide evidence-based answers as to effectiveness of the campaign and recommendations for future activities.

Solution

Evaluation Methodology – Due to the complex nature of the task, their team devised a mixed method approach to evaluate the effectiveness of current communications standards. These methods included:

  • Desk research to refine scope of evaluation
  • Focus groups in six member states
  • Telephone interviews with 20 campaign partners
  • Online surveys
  • Case studies in Austria, Finland and Poland
Result

Relevance – The campaign was found to be highly relevant as its target audiences had had a very low awareness of the gender pay gap and its effects.

Effectiveness – The campaign had varying levels of effectiveness depending on the target audience and the specific communication activities in question. The campaign was most successful with employees and less so with employers and senior managers, highlighting the difficulty in using a single message across broad audiences.

Recommendations – Amongst other things, Coffey recommended that the EC:

  • Create clearly articulated goals that are SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time bound). Such practices will help create more robust and appropriate communications activities in the future
  • Consider tailoring communications materials for varied audiences and nations
  • Include a ‘call to action’ focus in future campaigns. Findings indicated that there was a strong preference for messages that prompted an audience response and demonstrated a ‘what’s in it for me’ factor clearly
