Purchasing shares in a company buys you part ownership of that company. You're given the right to vote on who manages the company and receive a portion of company profits through the distribution of dividends.

Example: If a share price quote is $25, then that means one share is valued at $25.

Note: Shares are also referred to as stocks, equities and securities.

CFD

Is an abbreviation for "Contract for Difference". A CFD is a 'derivative' that is derived from the underlying value of the share price. A CFD’s allow you to go long (buy the CFD) or go short (sell the CFD).

CFD's give you leverage.

Example: Buying a CFD in XYZ provides you with an opportunity to purchase the shares at a variable rates such as 10 to 1 ratio instead of the full upfront share value cost i.e. paying $1,000 instead of $10,000.

Because CFDs are traded on margin, you must maintain the minimum margin level at all times.

Note: CFD’s are not recommended for novice traders.

Projects

Remote Energy (RE)

Optimum Energy Solutions

Energy Developments Remote Energy delivers safe, innovative, reliable, secure power generation solutions to standalone resource projects and remote communities throughout Australia.

They currently have over 389 MW of Remote Energy operations across 35 projects located throughout the mainland states of Australia, making us the largest independent remote energy producer in Australia operating in the up to 100 MW market.

The company is experienced in pipeline gas, LNG, CNG and diesel fuel and with reciprocating, open cycle and closed cycle gas turbine generation technologies. They have the capability and experience to match the best fuel and generation solutions with renewable energy or waste heat recovery technologies to meet their customer's needs.

Coober Pedy Renewable Hybrid Project

Coober Pedy is an iconic mining town in South Australia and, like many remote locations, relies on diesel-fired generators to provide electricity.

Energy Developments Ltd (EDL) is an ASX listed company that owns and operates over 900MW of Clean Energy and Remote Energy power stations worldwide. EDL provides safe, clean, low greenhouse gas emission power stations and remote energy solutions and has supplied power to Coober Pedy since 2004.

EDL is developing a new project to bring renewable energy to Coober Pedy. This solution will be capable of being replicated at other off-grid locations supplied by EDL in Australia. The initiative is being supported by up to $18.5 million funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), which has allowed the project to progress to advanced planning and decision making stages.

This project plans to install approximately 2 Megawatts (MW) of solar panels and 3MW of new wind generation located within the Precious Stone Fields mine reserve, across the Stuart Highway from the existing wind turbine.

EDL's existing power station (comprising 3.9MW of diesel generators) will be upgraded with additional equipment to integrate the renewable power. Renewable energy sourced from wind and solar integrated with upgraded diesel and enabling technologies will ensure reliable power supply regardless of weather or time of day.

Key Details

Lead organisation: Energy Developments Ltd (EDL)

Location: Coober Pedy, SA

Technology: Solar PV; Wind Generator Turbines; Batteries and related technologies for integration with diesel

ARENA program: Regional Australia's Renewables – Industry Program

Design Commencement Date: July 2014

Construction Start Date: October 2015 (subject to confirmation of project key deliverables)

Need

In off-grid locations, renewable energy has unique advantages over fossil fuels. Many remote Australian communities rely on diesel generators. Diesel generation is comparatively expensive to fuel and operate and the volatility of future fuel prices can create cost uncertainty. Transporting diesel fuel long distances to the generators is also costly, hazardous and affected by variable weather conditions in remote locations.

Project Innovation

The project would achieve amongst the highest renewable energy penetration in Australia at approximately 70% over the life of the project. This means that 70% of the current diesel fuel consumed at the Coober Pedy power station would be replaced by renewable energy. Coober Pedy has abundant wind and solar resources that complement each other very well. The sun shines through the day and there are relatively strong winds through the night. Combining the two renewable energy sources with advanced, proven enabling technologies (resistor, short-term storage and fast start diesel generators) will significantly reduce diesel consumption.

The town's total power requirements are expected to be supplied entirely by renewable energy approximately 50% of the time, with partial supply from renewable energy (supported by diesel power) during the other 50% of the time.

Benefit

This project is expected to provide a lower and more stable cost of electricity over the project life for the District Council of Coober Pedy and the South Australian Government. Reliable power supply will be maintained while diesel consumption is reduced, improving the environmental footprint.

Development of this project in a remote location like Coober Pedy will pave the way for EDL to replicate this type of renewable hybrid energy generation in other remote areas of Australia.

LNG and CNG

Energy Developments will continue to pursue opportunities to assist customers to switch from diesel fuels to LNG and CNG as a viable, alternative long-term energy source for power generation and transport.

LNG is created by chilling natural gas to minus 161°C, turning it to liquid. During this process, the gas is reduced to one 600th of its original volume, making it economical to transport long distances in this form.

This market opportunity has been created by the widening gap between the global price of diesel/oil fuels and natural gas in certain markets. This strategy is particularly relevant in remote areas where there is limited or no existing energy infrastructure such as gas pipelines or electricity grids. In Karratha, Western Australia, Energy Developments has built and operates a 200 tonnes per day LNG production facility as part of the West Kimberley Power Project (WKPP).

This project has allowed Energy Developments to deliver long-term low emission power supply to the towns of Broome, Derby, Halls Creek, Fitzroy Crossing and Looma in the booming Kimberley region of Western Australia.

The Company has also developed an innovative haulage system for delivering CNG to remote power stations that service mining operations and remote communities. Trucks used for haulage also run on CNG and Energy Developments is also actively supporting the development of technologies to displace diesel with LNG and CNG as fuels for heavy vehicles.

The Benefits of using Liquefied Natural Gas as a Diesel Alternative:

  • Lower Fuel Cost: Conversion cost can be paid back over a short period
  • Lower Emissions: LNG has lower greenhouse gas and particulate emissions compared with diesel
  • Lower Noise: Much quieter than normal diesel engines

Yulara Compressed Natural Gas Transport Project
  • Location: Alice Springs and Yulara, 440 km south-west of Alice Springs, Northern Territory
  • Components: Gas plants at Alice Springs and Yulara, and a CNG transport system
  • Start of operation: October 2006

Yulara CNG unloading facilityEnergy Developments' strategic focus on innovative energy solutions is helping deliver clean and reliable power to Australia's world famous Red Centre through the Yulara Compressed Natural Gas Transport Project.

The Yulara (CNG) Transport Project fuels the power station supplying electricity to the World Heritage-listed, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in the Northern Territory.

Energy Developments built, owns and operates the project which involves compressing natural gas into cylinders in Alice Springs and transporting them to the Yulara power station, 18 kilometres (km) from Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock.

The power station services Uluru and the local Kata Tjuta community, which hosts more than 400,000 visitors each year.

Energy Developments has signed a five-year agreement with the Northern Territory Government-owned electricity generation company Power and Water Corporation (PWC) to deliver the project.

Under the agreement, Energy Developments will supply up to 250 terajoules (TJ) of fuel to the power station each year.

The project includes gas plants at Alice Springs and Yulara. Gas from the Palm Valley to Alice Springs natural gas pipeline is compressed into carbon-fibre cylinders at the Alice Springs compression station.

The cylinders are mounted on a CNG transport system of crates and trailers to be hauled 440 km by road trains from Alice Springs to Yulara. The gas is then decompressed to fuel the 4.5 megawatt (MW) power station.

This Yulara CNG Transport Project is one of the first projects of its type in Australia and is consistent with Energy Developments' strategy of providing innovative energy solutions in remote areas by replacing or supplementing diesel as the primary energy source.

The project delivers environmental benefits over diesel because CNG produces lower emissions of particulates, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide.

The economic advantage is the significant reduction in diesel-fuel costs that would otherwise be incurred to run the power station.

Landfill Gas

Landfill gas is generated by decomposing organic matter in refuse tips. It mostly consists of methane and carbon dioxide mixed with water vapour and organic compounds. The substantial methane content of landfill gas enables it to be used as a power generation fuel.

The commercial use of landfill gas as a fuel requires LFG to be extracted at a reasonably-consistent flow and quality. Energy Developments has achieved this by drilling a pattern of vertical gas extraction wells linked by underground pipes to a gas collection facility. The entire system is maintained under a vacuum, inducing landfill gas to flow into the collection facility, where gas processing reduces moisture and filters out fine particles. The processed landfill gas is then used as a fuel in either gas engine or gas turbine generators. The power generation facilities are interconnected with a power grid to enable the sale of electricity produced.

Energy Developments has many landfill gas power projects in operation and under development in Australia, the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. With its existing generating capacity and its well-developed technology, the Company is a world leader in landfill gas power generation.

WCMG

Coal mining liberates methane gas trapped in coal seams. Waste Coal Mine Gas (WCMG) gas is a safety hazard and impediment in underground coal mines. It must be extracted by mine ventilation and coal seam drainage. This extracted methane can be used as a power generation fuel. WCMG has more than 20 times the global warming potential of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Energy Developments developed and owns one of the world's largest Waste Coal Mine Gas power generation projects at the Appin and Tower coal mines in New South Wales, Australia. This 97 MW project completed in 1996 established Energy Developments as the world leader in WCMG power generation.

German Creek Project
  • Location: 200 km west of Rockhampton, Queensland
  • Components: German Creek power station
  • Generating capacity: 45 megawatt (MW)
  • Primary fuel: Waste Coal Mine Gas (WCMG)
  • Start of operation: November 2006

German CreekEnergy Developments Limited continues to pioneer the combustion of waste coal mine gas (WCMG), an environmentally-damaging and potentially dangerous greenhouse gas (GHG), at its 45 megawatt (MW) German Creek Waste Coal Mine Gas Project in Queensland.

Energy Developments aims to foster strategic partnerships and alliances with coal mining companies to use its know-how and experience demonstrated at German Creek and replicate this success in future.

At the German Creek coal mine in the Bowen Basin in central Queensland, the company applying its technologies to clean combust WCMG gasses, which are more than 20 times damaging to the environment than carbon dioxide (CO2).

This means Energy Developments not only prevents the harmful gases escaping into the atmosphere, it uses them to fuel a 45 MW power station which generates revenue through the sale of electricity.

Energy Developments Managing Director Greg Pritchard said the WCMG captured and used at Anglo American's German Creek mine each year achieves abatement of over 800 000 tonnes of CO2 each year during the life of the project.

The environmental benefit of the German Creek WCMG Project is equivalent to taking more than 230,000 cars off the road in a full year.

The German Creek WCMG Project was completed with the assistance of a $15 million grant from the Australian Government under its Greenhouse Gas Abatement programme, supplemented by debt and cash reserves.

Moranbah North Project
  • Location: Moranbah, Central Queensland
  • Components: Power Station
  • Generating capacity: 46 megawatt (MW)
  • Primary fuel: Waste Coal Mine Gas (WCMG)
  • Start of operation: Late 2008

Energy Developments Limited continues to pioneer the combustion of Waste Coal Mine Gas (WCMG), an environmentally damaging and dangerous green house gas, at its 46 megawatt (MW) Moranbah North Power Project in Queensland.

The $60 million project cements Energy Developments as a leading player in WCMG projects within Australia and overseas. It builds upon the company's skills and expertise from the successful development and operation of earlier WCMG fuelled power projects - 45 MW German Creek Power Project in Central Queensland and the 97 MW Appin/Tower Power Project near Wollongong in New South Wales.

The power station was built on a turnkey basis under a separate construction contract with Clarke Energy. By leveraging the established operational capability at the German Creek Power Station, the Moranbah North plant began full scale operation in late 2008. Moranbah North is now producing at full capacity and successfully participating in the National Electricity Market.
