General Overview

About GrainCorp

GrainCorp is a leading Australian agribusiness with ownership of unique assets spanning the grain and oilseed supply chain. Through the seamless integration of these operations around the world, they are able to provide personal customer service, high quality assurance, confidence of delivery and competitive pricing.

GNCGrainCorp has a long, rich history beginning in 1916.

Originally part of the New South Wales Government's Department of Agriculture, GrainCorp was established as the Grain Elevators Board.

In 1917 Canadian architect J.S. Metcalf designed a bulk grain terminal in the Sydney suburb, Glebe. Completed in 1922 it was Australia's first bulk grain terminal and was complimented by GrainCorp’s first elevator built in Peak Hill, 50 km north of Parkes, NSW. These projects laid the foundation for GrainCorp’s grain handling and storage network.

In 1939, the Australian Wheat Board was founded who held a monopoly on wheat exporting for the next 60 years.

Becoming GrainCorp

After the NSW Grain Corporation Act was passed in 1992, the company was privatised and sold for $100 million. The company was named: GrainCorp.

In 1996, the Marketing business was established and GrainCorp became the first bulk handler to trade grain within Australia, moving away from the price monopoly of government entities. Two years later, GrainCorp listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.

The new millennium brought with it a period of acquisition, cementing GrainCorp's position as Australia’s leading grain handler: Vicgrain (Victoria) acquired in 2000, Grainco (Queensland) in 2003 and Hunter Grain in 2007.

GrainCorp now has over 180 country elevators in Australia. It boasts a total grain storage capacity of up to 20 million tonnes spread across more than 2700 km from Mackay (Queensland) to Portland (Victoria).

It also operates seven bulk grain export elevators, serviced by 20 contracted trains with the capability of hauling up to 4 million tonnes of grain annually.

A further 1 million tonnes of road transport is managed annually, and the Ports elevate an average of 5 million tonnes of grain and up to 1.5 million tonnes of non-grain commodities annually.

Diversifying Their Operations

In 2002, GrainCorp entered a joint venture with US agribusiness Cargill to purchase Allied Mills, expanding its presence along the grain chain, including production and processing. This saw the start of their bakery products and milling businesses.

In 2008, the Australian wheat market was deregulated and the single wheat desk was removed. GrainCorp now trades commodities in its own right, with Marketing offices in Australia, Europe, Singapore, China, the UK and North America. GrainCorp Marketing now buys and sells more than 4.5 million tonnes of wheat, barley, sorghum and canola per year, servicing customers domestically and internationally.

The next strategic acquisition came in 2009, with the purchase of United Malt Holdings to form GrainCorp Malt. The acquisition of Germany’s Schill Malz in 2011 well placed GrainCorp to serve European and export customers. A malt plant was also acquired in Western Australia in 2011, expanding their operations to the Australian west coast.

GrainCorp Malt is now one of the world's largest commercial malt producers, producing over 1 million tonnes of high quality and specialty malts annually for some of the world's leading brewers and distillers, as well as the emerging craft brew market.

In October 2012, GrainCorp acquired the Gardner Smith Group, and Goodman Fielder’s commercial fats and oils business, Integro Foods (“Integro”). The two businesses have combined to form GrainCorp Oils, creating a leading integrated edible oils business with operations in Australia and New Zealand.

2015 & Beyond

Today, GrainCorp is Australia's largest agribusiness and a top ASX 100 company, operating a range of integrated businesses: Storage & Logistics, Marketing, Malt and Oils. Their operations span across Australia, NZ, USA, Canada, Singapore, China, the UK and Europe, providing an increasingly important service across the food supply chain.

A lot has changed in almost one hundred years, but GrainCorp’s commitment to providing superior customer service has remained the same.

Mission, Vision and Strategy

An international leader in food ingredients and agribusiness, creating value by connecting consumers and producers.

Grow as their customers’ preferred partner – driven by their passionate people and assets around the world.

GrainCorp’s business model is based on:

Three core grains - wheat, barley and canola. GrainCorp focuses on the ‘drier climate’ grains where GrainCorp has comparative advantages of grain origination, freight differentials and technical expertise.

Three integrated grain activities - storage & logistics, marketing and processing. GrainCorp creates and captures value in its core grains along the grain chain, with insight into consumer requirements in these grains.

Three operating geographies - Australasia, North America and Europe. These regions collectively service over 50% of the global trade in GrainCorp’s core grains, providing market insight, price risk management and multi-origin capability.

GrainCorp creates and captures value for consumers, growers and shareholders from the following competitive advantages:

  • Strategic assets - GrainCorp’s unique “end to end” infrastructure network at all stages of the grain chain in GrainCorp’s three core grains.
  • Freight advantage - Proximity to the world’s growth markets for grain: Asia, Middle East and Africa
  • Grain Origination - Access to grain with strong quality advantages to satisfy a diversified range of consumer products.

GrainCorp is currently pursuing strategic initiatives aimed at delivering incremental underlying EBITDA of approximately $110 million by the end of the 2016 financial year. GrainCorp expects to invest $250 million in capital expenditure to implement these initiatives (Excluding $20 million of capital expenditure spent in FY12 on “Gamechanger” initiatives).

The common thread that binds GrainCorp together is their values.

What are Their Values?

GrainCorp’s values help define their organisational culture by providing a common understanding of how they do things at GrainCorp and how they should behave towards each other, their customers and other stakeholders. Everyone at GrainCorp is responsible for professional and ethical business conduct and is accountable for ensuring their decisions and actions are consistent with their values.

Safety Strategy

They have set themselves ambitious safety targets over the next three years.

This requires every individual in the organisation to take an active role in safety. They aim to ensure that safety is embedded to a level that no task is undertaken without a risk assessment to oversee its strategy and its implementation across the company. They have an executive level governance structure in place to meet their targets.

Safety is their no.1 value. They are committed to achieving best-practice safety performance and to building a culture of ‘Zero Harm – Safe for Life’, to ensure safety at work and at home is never compromised.

Sustainability, Environment and Energy Efficiency

GNCAs a significant contributor to the agricultural sector, GrainCorp recognises that the adoption of sound environmental management practices and sustainable business operations are important.

Sustainability is one of GrainCorp’s values and all employees are encouraged to embrace it. Sustainability to GrainCorp means balancing three interconnected dimensions – environment and efficiency, people and society, and governance.

GrainCorp’s leadership ensures that they consider environment and energy impacts when making business decisions. GrainCorp also supports its employees taking part in small and large-scale sustainability initiatives both within the company and in the broader community

Energy Efficiency Opportunities Program and Regulatory Compliance

As part of a commitment to conduct business in an ethical and sustainable way, GrainCorp is a registered participant in, and complies with, the following:

  • The Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) program administered by the Federal Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism
  • The National Energy and Greenhouse Reporting Scheme including the requirement to publicly report greenhouse gas emissions under the National Greenhouse & Energy Reporting Act 2007
  • The international Sustainable Agriculture Initiative
  • Environment Protection Licences in regions where they operate.

Companies that participate in programs like EEO aim to meet energy use thresholds, undertake energy use assessments and identify energy efficiency opportunities. GrainCorp believes the EEO Program will deliver long term benefits to the company through operational cost savings and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

As the majority owner of Allied Mills, GrainCorp has elected to act as that organisations 'controlling corporation' for the purposes of the Energy Efficiency Opportunities Act 2006. This means GrainCorp and Allied Mills are joint participants in the EEO Program.

Community And Sponsorship

GNCAs GrainCorp expands internationally and diversifies its business, its history and heart remains in the rural and regional communities in which it operates. GrainCorp recognises that it is more than a company or an employer in these areas – rather it is a member of these communities.

As well as providing financial support for specific projects, GrainCorp encourages its employees to be actively involved in their communities. Our employees support their communities in non-financial ways such as lending equipment and volunteering their time and knowledge, particularly in times of natural disasters. GrainCorp also provides sponsorship for regional sporting groups in Australia and at local community events.

Supporting Communities

GrainCorp's commitment is underpinned by its desire to play an active and meaningful role in improving local community wellbeing.

They build on a rich history of community support and continue to fund local initiatives around the world as well as support their communities with skilled volunteering
