The Glycell Process

Leaf Resources’ breakthrough pretreatment technology – the Glycell™ Process – revolutionises the production of sustainable and renewable bio-based products from lignocellulosic biomass.

Their patent pending Glycell™ technology is a suite of highly advanced chemistry and engineering processes that break down plant biomass at lower temperature and pressure and generate a higher yield of cellulose than conventional approaches. Glycell™ is also more cost effective and operationally efficient.

The cellulose is then converted to cellulosic sugars through enzymatic hydrolysis and the lignin, hemicellulose and glycerol become valuable co-products. Cellulosic sugars are a major feedstock for green, renewable biobased chemicals, bioplastics, biofuels and products, with fast growing multi-billion dollar markets.

The GlycellTM process can produce cellulosic sugars at under $50 per tonne when co-products are included. This compares with $230 per tonne for sugars produced from the conversion of dilute acid and $280 per tonne for raw sugar.

Testing at 5 tonnes per day have proven that the Glycell™process generates significantly larger yields of cellulose than conventional pretreatment approaches. Additional to this validation, Glycell™ pretreated biomass is shown to have much greater enzyme kinetics for cellulose to sugar conversion, and the lower heat and temperature process requirements enable ‘cleaner’ (more enriched with less decomposition) sugars to be produced

Bio-Based Markets
Cellulose –Driving Bio-Based Chemistry

In virtually every industry consumer demand for greener more natural products is fuelling a surge of interest in bio-based alternatives to replace oil based products.

Bio-Based Building Blocks

Cellulose and hemicellulose which are extracted from biomass, and the sugars that are released from these carbohydrates, are the primary building blocks in the production of a vast array of biofuels, chemicals and plastics, which may be used in virtually all of today's industrial and manufacturing processes.

Cellulosic Derived Fuels

Cellulosic derived fuels will be especially important as the world transitions towards a circular zero carbon economy. Maintaining a continuous flux of affordable (drop-in) liquid fuels is vital for existing industries, infrastructure and transport like automobiles and aircraft. Using dense, high-energy waste biomass to generate useful biofuels is a rapidly growing market that the Glycell™ process is well placed to capitalise on as it expands further.

Silica extraction from Biomass

Many plants contain silica, and some products of agriculture, for example, rice husks, contain as much as 10% silica by dry weight. Rice husk is the outermost layer of rice grain that is separated from the food product in a milling process. Around 20% of rice harvest weight is husk. Rice production in Asia alone produces about 770 million tons of husk annually.

The processing capacity of commercial rice mills range from 400 to 10,000 tonnes/day. The largest mills produce 2,000 tonnes of husk per day. This large biomass resource is available at milling sites at little or no cost as rice husks have limited use.

The uses of rice husks include combustion for local electricity generation at smaller mills in Asia to pasteurisation and bagging for home gardening at larger mills in the USA. In many rice growing regions rice husks are waste sent to landfill or burned.

Precipitated silica, an amorphous form of silicon dioxide, is versatile product with many uses. For example, it is used as a filler, and a substitute for carbon black, in the manufacture of tyres and other rubber goods. It is also used in nutrition and health products, paints, inks and coatings, paper manufacture and toothpaste formulations.

Precipitated silica is typically made from quartz sand via a sodium silicate intermediate product. It may also be made from the ash of silica containing plant materials. Both processes consume large amounts of energy and produce waste streams.

Leaf Resources is researching and developing new low-energy processes for extracting silica from rice husks and other plant materials, especially the by-products of agriculture. Leaf aims for these processes to use much less energy than the conventional processes and produce very little waste. Leaf is evaluation co-products including the biomass residue and its potential as a feedstock for the Glycell process.


Products

Product Opportunities

The Glycell™ process can operate at any scale, small or large, providing maximum flexibility for a plant to be suited to the scale of potential opportunities in the bio-based chemical, bioplastic and biofuel markets.

At $65 billion1, the bio-based chemical market is already large but is forecast to secure 22% of the $2 trillion chemical market by 20252. Underpinning this growth is the fact that “virtually every petroleum-based chemical can be replaced by a biomass-derived chemical”3. The goal of major chemical companies is to have 25% of their chemicals bio-based by 20204.

At $2 billion5, bio-plastics is a smaller market although Morgan Stanley predicts it to grow by an annual rate of up to 40%5. Given that the fossil-based plastics market is currently 75 times larger6 and that up to 90% of fossil-based plastics can be replaced by bio-based plastics6, the potential for growth is significant. Companies such as Coca Cola recognise this opportunity:

Low-Cost Cellulosic Sugars

Bioeconomy

The lower price of cellulosic sugars from the Glycell™ process also opens up possibilities to replace starch, particularly corn starch, as an input to the 200 corn ethanol plants in the USA. The ability to supplement existing ethanol mills with cellulosic sugar inputs will greatly enhance the environmental benefits of this industry.

Such diverse opportunities are strongly supported by the abundant supply of biomass. There is enough biomass in the world for the production of $7507 billion of cellulosic sugars. In this context, the Glycell™ process represents a real economic breakthrough because it utilizes every portion of biomass input. For example, 94% cellulose (C6) is converted to sugars quickly and in large quantities. Hemi cellulose (C5) is developed as a separate stream of sugars to open up more product opportunities. Lignin comes through the process in a native form, which has higher value usage in chemical world than the current utilization of conventional burning.

Biorefining

Leaf Resources can also revalue their glycerol to make a profit, which brings the final cost of produced sugars to below $50 per tonne and enables the overall process to be competitive with equivalent production.

Other benefits for chemical production and derivative products come directly as a result of using biomass. One of the biggest is that biomass already contains the oxygen necessary to develop a wide range of chemicals and other elements required to develop plastics. By contrast, petro chemical production requires introducing oxygen and other key elements at additional cost.

Licence Glycell

Breakthrough Sugar Production Platform Technology

Leaf welcomes discussions with companies seeking an advanced second generation sugar production platform on a technology licencing basis or to joint venture within a project.

Leaf Resources is currently dealing with several companies on licensing opportunities. For example, they are engaging with potential partners to discuss building of their first commercial facility, either through a license or joint venture arrangement.


Projects

Malaysia

Leaf and their project development JV partner Claeris have spent significant efforts discussing and progressing potential biorefineries/second generation sugar (2G sugar) projects, enabled by Leaf’s GlycellTM process, in Malaysia.

Malaysia represents an exciting and long-term location for biomass and end chemical markets. Key memoranda have been signed with Leaf and Malaysian Government authorities (Agensi Inovasi Malaysia (AIM) and Malaysian Bio-economy Development Corporation.

Sarawak

Discussions with various state and local authorities in Sarawak continue to progress positively.  The sheer size and scale of the potential Sarawak project mean that planning and decision making are progressing in line with the scale of the opportunity and further decisions on this project are expected.

Leaf Development (the joint development company of Leaf Resources’ and Claeris’) is in frequent discussion with the relevant Federal, state and local authorities and Leaf Development remains confident of a positive outcome in Sarawak.

AIM continues to acknowledge the importance of having a 2G sugar facility (embedding Leaf’s GlycellTM process) as part of the Sarawak bio-hub and to state their support for Leaf as part of this development. Sarawak remains a large and attractive project.

Johor

A site in the State of Johor (on the Malaysian Peninsula) has recently been investigated.  An established bio-park in Johor with substantial facilities, including utilities and potential product offtakers, has expressed interest in securing Leaf’s Glycell™ process as its 2G sugar platform.

The major advantages of Johor are:

An accelerated pathway to finalised construction;

An established supply chain of oil palm waste (empty fruit bunch – EFB), and;

Potential off-take customers within the park.

BIO Nexus Status

Leaf Development has lodged an application for Bio-Nexus status through a wholly owned subsidiary of Leaf Development, Leaf Malaysia OpCo Sdn Bhd.

Leaf continues to advance the development of its first commercial scale facility in Malaysia, including now a site in Johor offering potential engineering and construction advantages. Malaysian federal and state governments and their agencies continue to support Leaf’s objectives. At the same time, Leaf is committed to exploring additional opportunities with new and existing partners who have identified the potential that Glycell™ 2G sugar process presents in reshaping the green chemicals industry.
