History and Future

History

The founder of Matrix Composites & Engineering, Maxwell Begley, was a pioneer in his field developing heavy engineering equipment for use in the state's oil and gas industry.

Matrix Composites & Engineering officially began operations in 1999, although the Company's origins can be traced back to 1980 when Maxwell Begley founded Begley International.

While working at Begley International with his father Maxwell, current CEO Aaron Begley identified the need to diversify the Company's product and services offering and started to look at the application of composite materials in the offshore and subsea sectors. This led to a company restructure in 1996 for the purpose of attracting seed capital and thus Matrix Composites & Engineering was established in 1999.

Having gained significant brand awareness and global market share while facing an array of opportunities for future growth, Begley International merged with Matrix in 2008 and was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange as Matrix Composites & Engineering in November 2009.

Manufacturing Facility

The AU$80 million facility in Henderson, Western Australia is 20,000 square meters, making it the largest and most technically advanced composites syntactic plant in the world.

The plant is comprised of a manufacturing, service and warehouse facility and houses their sales and administration office. This industry leading facility provides us with a significant competitive advantage over their competition in the Northern Hemisphere due to the manufacturing scale and cost efficiencies provided.

Quality Assurance

The Matrix quality management system is founded on a culture of continuous improvement and is based around their ISO 9001-2008 accreditation.

Matrix operates under the requirements of API Q1/API 16F for its buoyancy products and ISO 13628-16 (API 17J) for its SURF ancillary products. Matrix's Offshore Services division operates under the requirements of ISO 9001.

Matrix has an integrated quality management system comprising quality, OHS and environment. Their systems are continuously improving to ensure their products and services remain ahead of industry trends and client expectations.

Production

The manufacturing complex in Henderson, Western Australia is an example of best in class processes, practices, equipment and facilities. Key process parameters are continuously monitored and controlled by the Citect SCADA automation network to ensure process and product conformance throughout the entire value adding stream.

Product quality is ensured via robust process controls and ongoing selective testing to confirm product conformance to the demanding API 16F standard.

Designed to operate in line with the latest lean manufacturing principles, material is pulled through the plant which minimises work in process via one piece flow. With a focus on continuous improvement throughout all levels of the organisation, Matrix ensures ongoing optimisation of safety, quality, speed to market and cost.

Testing Facilities

Hydrostatic Testing

Matrix Composites & Engineering hydrostatic pressure testing facility includes a 7500PSI deepwater simulation chamber, the largest of its type in the world for this pressure class. The facility allows them to qualify and test buoyancy systems up to 63 inches in diameter to a service depth of 17,500 ft. The chamber can record pressure, buoyancy loss and temperature changes over time and meets the requirements of API 16F.

Function & Fit-up Testing

Matrix has invested in a number of risers for the purpose of fit-up testing in the pre-production phase. The fit-up test provides additional guarantees that the modules can be easily assembled onto the riser and will not foul with clamps, bolts or lines. It also provides assurance that the attachment straps fit and can be tensioned correctly.

Riser Joint Stack Testing

With the industry moving towards deeper water drilling and the cost of on-deck riser storage space at a premium, riser joints have to be stacked higher and higher. Matrix is able to verify that drilling riser joints can be stacked at these new heights using their stack test frame assembly. Using a section of riser joint and buoyancy module assembly, loads can be incrementally increased to a predetermined height or load, inclusive of reserve factor.

Displacement Testing

If required, modules can be tested in their displacement tank to confirm that the theoretical target buoyancy has been achieved.
