Services

Vessel Operations

MMA currently owns and operates over 60 modern offshore vessels throughout Australia and internationally.

MMA's diversified fleet of vessels includes:

  • Anchor Handling Tugs;
  • Anchor Handling Tug Supply vessels;
  • Barges;
  • Inspection, Maintenance and Repair vessels;
  • Harbour Tugs;
  • Multi-Purpose vessels;
  • Platform Supply Vessels; and
  • Utility vessels.

MMA has custom built a number of vessels for specialist marine services and is experienced in the provision of marine support across the exploration, construction and production sectors of the oil and gas development cycle.

MMA’s international operating entity, MMA Offshore Asia Pte Ltd, is responsible for managing the international vessel fleet including the newly acquired Jaya fleet.

Having a wide range of vessels in adjacent geographic regions means that MMA can transfer vessels between markets to offer its clients a range of international and Australian based solutions.

MMA is consistently investing in its fleet renewal and infrastructure development program to ensure they are able to meet the emerging requirements of their clients in the offshore oil and gas industry both in Australia and internationally.

Australian Supply Bases

MMA operates strategically located supply bases in Dampier and Broome.

Spanning 28 hectares, MMA’s Dampier Supply Base has a six berth wharf facility, open sealed laydown areas, undercover storage and offices capable of servicing the array of vessels engaged in offshore support activities.

MMA is in the unique position of being able to offer its clients in the North West Shelf the full range of marine logistics services from vessel support and supply base services, to ship repair and maintenance facilities.

The most recent development at MMA’s Dampier Supply Base is the MMA Offshore Logistics Base, which encompasses 11 hectares and employs 25 people. MMA’s Broome Supply Base encompasses over 11 hectares of land and is strategically located to service exploration, construction and production activities in the Browse Basin. The Broome Supply Base operations, conducted through an incorporated joint venture between MMA and Toll Holdings Ltd, offers clients open laydown and undercover storage, recently built offices, casing storage and wash-down facilities.

Slipway

MMA’s Dampier Slipway is strategically located at the Dampier Supply Base and is capable of docking vessels up to 3,500 tonne displacement.

The Slipway is a key MMA asset. The Slipway team provide timely maintenance and repair services to MMA’s expanding fleet in the North West which ensures that MMA is capable of servicing its clients’ marine requirements safely and with a degree of flexibility that no other operator in the region can provide.

MMA’s Slipway is the only ship repair facility in direct proximity to the North West Shelf, with the alternatives requiring significant travel time. In addition to servicing MMA’s own fleet, the Slipway provides services to third party operators including routine and emergency dockings, mobilisations and a wide range of marine repairs and maintenance services.

The Slipway commenced operations in 2001 and has docked over 650 vessels in that time.

Dampier Supply Base

MMA's Dampier Supply Base provides a multi-user facility capable of servicing the range of operators currently working in the North West Shelf region.

MMA is the only company operating on the North West Shelf that can provide a suite of integrated marine services that encompasses vessels, wharf facilities, supply base facilities, slipway facilities and engineering support services.

MMA's private wharf allows their clients to load directly from their storage areas onto vessels for delivery to their offshore operations. With many of the cargoes being time critical, this seamless transition provides significant benefits in terms of efficiency and cost.

Infrastructure development at the Dampier Supply Base has seen the construction of a 2250m2 warehouse and a $25 million extension to MMA's private wharf. The wharf extension has doubled the berth face, provided a dedicated landing ramp for Roll On Roll Off (RORO) cargo and added three extra berths, all with fuel loading facilities.

MMA has also recently acquired an 11.7ha area in the King Bay Industrial Estate, adjacent to MMA's existing Dampier Supply Base facility. The new area comprises open laydown area, undercover storage and office space and increases MMA's total Supply Base land area in Dampier by approximately 60%.

Broome Supply Base

The Broome Supply Base was initially established by MMA in 2000. In October 2006, MMA formed a joint venture with Toll Holdings (managed by Toll Energy) to develop and manage an expanded Broome Supply Base under the banner Toll Mermaid Logistics Broome Pty Ltd (TMLB). Starting from a small base, the Broome Supply Base has grown significantly in recent times and is strategically placed to service exploration, future production and construction activities in the Browse Basin, with a view to potential LNG developments, the long term prospects in this area are very exciting.

During this rapid growth period, the Broome Supply Base has maintained an exemplary safety record, recently celebrating 13 1/2 years 'lost time injury free' from February 2000 until October 2013. TMLB’s safety practices are a key component of their daily operations and receive considerable time and resourcing. To date, the Broome Supply Base has supported major exploration programs by leading oil and gas explorers including Apache Energy Limited, ConocoPhillips Pty Ltd, BHP Billiton Petroleum, Santos Ltd, Shell Development Australia, Woodside Energy Ltd, JAPEX, IB Resources and Murphy Oil.

Supply Base facilities include four yards; a dedicated 30,000m2 casing yard with 65 casing racks, a wash down bay and casing bundling area; 3,200m2 of undercover storage and a 8,000m2 sealed laydown area at the Port; the main supply base consisting of a new 680m2 administration building, dangerous good storage facility (500m2), five 500m2 storage sheds and seven client offices; plus a brand new 46,000m2 purpose built supply base.

MMA Offshore offer a range of services and facilities support for offshore exploration, drilling and production, including:

  • BroomeLong term, short term, open lay down storage
  • Undercover storage
  • Fully or partially serviced long term office facilities
  • Labour supply
  • Equipment hire
  • Linehaul to and from Broome/local cartage within Broome
  • Handling of dangerous and specialist cargos
  • Waste management
  • Dangerous goods storage facility
  • Undercover wash down bay facility
  • Offshore container hire
  • Cranes

Projects

Gorgon LNG Project Barrow Island

The MMA Offshore Dampier Supply Base (DSB) is the primary mainland supply base on the North West Shelf for the Gorgon construction project. Operations on the base commenced in late 2009 with a team of 25 MMA employees providing stevedoring & supply base services to the project.

MMA's stevedores, logistics and marine support personnel conduct material control, freight movement and loadout operations at the DSB. Barge loading & RORO operations are performed at their purpose built landbacked Barge Berth where MMA personnel load up to 3 LCT Barges per day.

MMA also conducts final quarantine preparation, including; remediation, washdown and consolidation of freight to Gorgon quarantine specifications.

MMA commenced supporting the Gorgon project with a full marine spread in January 2010. The initial scope included berthing and unberthing 300ft cargo barges at the MMA Offshore DSB Barge Berth. Soon after this scope commenced, MMA began towing 250ft cargo barges between the DSB and Barrow Island.

September 2010 saw the mobilisation of two 250ft water carrying barges and a support tug to tow the barges. MMA has now mobilised a total of 17 vessels into the project to carry out various functions, including; supply, fuel transfer, cyclone contingency, accommodation and desalination services.

MMA is privileged to contribute to the enormously significant Gorgon project from both a supply base and marine services perspective.

The MMA Offshore DSB is a hub of activity and the tonnage of freight processed through the facility and shipped to Barrow Island has steadily increased since 2009.

MMA personnel have also showed particular resourcefulness in adopting and executing Chevron's stringent Environmental and Quarantine procedures including taking the lead on remediation, washdown and final inspections.

At the height of construction activity, the MMA fleet dedicated to Gorgon has numbered 17 vessels.

On a number of occasions MMA has conducted difficult international mobilisations and complex vessel modifications to solve specific challenges faced by the project. For example, MMA project managed the modification of the Toll Sandfly such that it met the particular project requirements for a fuel LTC. MMA also sourced and installed a desalination plant on the back of the Mermaid Vision, effectively mobilising a water-making and transporting vessel into the project.

Angel Gas & Condensate Project

As primary marine supplier in relation to the transportation and installation of the Angel Jacket and DB30 Pipelay operations, MMA was able to provide an integrated service offering that ensured the safe and successful completion of the work scope on time and on budget.

MMA's operations involved numerous international barge tows to transport the jacket and piles from their fabrication yards to the offshore construction site, as well as the launch upend and set down of the Angel jacket.

MMA then went on to conduct multiple pipehauls from Batam to Dampier and supported the subsequent DB30 Pipeline installation project.

MMA's dedicated project fleet comprised of 5 vessels, 3 from their own core fleet and another 2 sourced from the market to fulfill specific client requirements.

This included the provision of primary tow vessels, anchor handling vessels, infield support vessels, crew transfer vessels and HRV support vessels.

MMA is in the unique position of being able to offer its clients in the North West Shelf the full gamut of marine logistics services from vessel support and Supply Base services, to ship repair and maintenance facilities. As such, MMA also provided McDermotts with a full range of Supply Base and Slipway services out of its Dampier Supply Base, offering a complete solution based on the integration of marine and land based assets.

Ocean Bottom Cable Laying & TZ Project

MMA has been operating in partnership with Geokinetics since 2008 to successfully execute a number of shallow water Ocean Bottom Cable (OBC) laying projects and Transition Zone (TZ) seismic data acquisitions.

The fleet consists of three vessels, one for laying and retrieval of the cable, another as the source vessel for seismic data collection and the third as the recording and processing vessel for the data.

The OBC fleet commenced operations in Australia for Apache and has since remobilised to West Africa to conduct complex survey work for Sonongol in Angola and Eni in Gabon.

Following the successful completion of the Sonogol and Eni contracts, the fleet sailed to West PNG to undertake survey and seismic work for BP Indonesia. The operations received such positive feedback that BP awarded the OBC fleet a further contract based out of Mexico, where they are currently operating.

MMA also supports Geokinetics' TZ operations in Egypt with a state of the art accommodation vessel, specifically modified for the task.

Geokinetics, is the 2nd largest provider of seismic acquisition services in the World, and MMA's alliance with the company represents an exciting development of their global capability.

Pluto LNG Project

Woodside's Pluto LNG Project is on track to become the fastest developed liquefied natural gas project in the world, with first LNG expected in early 2011. The Project will process gas from the Pluto and Xena gas fields, located about 190km north-west of Karratha in Western Australia, into LNG and condensate.

The $150 million offshore installation contract was awarded to Acergy inclusive of the installation of subsea manifolds, valve structures, umbilicals, a mono-ethylene glycol injection line and pipeline stabilisation as well as the tie-in of flowlines in water depths of up to 850 metres.
