Share

Purchasing shares in a company buys you part ownership of that company. You're given the right to vote on who manages the company and receive a portion of company profits through the distribution of dividends.

Example: If a share price quote is $25, then that means one share is valued at $25.

Note: Shares are also referred to as stocks, equities and securities.

CFD

Is an abbreviation for "Contract for Difference". A CFD is a 'derivative' that is derived from the underlying value of the share price. A CFD’s allow you to go long (buy the CFD) or go short (sell the CFD).

CFD's give you leverage.

Example: Buying a CFD in XYZ provides you with an opportunity to purchase the shares at a variable rates such as 10 to 1 ratio instead of the full upfront share value cost i.e. paying $1,000 instead of $10,000.

Because CFDs are traded on margin, you must maintain the minimum margin level at all times.

General Overview

About Myer

Myer is Australia's largest department store group and has been synonymous with style and fashion for over 100 years. Generating total sales of over $3.1 billion in FY2014, they have a valuable footprint of 67 stores in prime retail locations across Australia that is complemented by their well-recognised brand and supported by their recently enhanced online, digital and mobile platforms. This combination sets the platform for a leading omni-channel experience for their customers, however they choose to shop with us.

They are focused on providing inspiration to everyone, including their customers, their 12,500 team members, their 54,000 shareholders, their 1,200 suppliers globally and the many communities that they engage with their strong brand. Myer is a significant employer and has a long history of philanthropy and local community engagement.

The Myer merchandise offer includes 11 core product categories: Womenswear; Menswear; Miss Shop (Youth); Childrenswear; Intimate apparel; Beauty, fragrance and cosmetics; Homewares; Electrical goods; Toys; Footwear, handbags and accessories; and General merchandise.

History

1899 - 1910

Sidney Myer and his brother Elcon worked briefly at a drapery store in Melbourne's Flinders Lane before opening the first MYER store in Bendigo (1900). The brothers continued to prosper, opening another Bendigo store in 1908. Myer's inventive advertising and exciting promotions acted as a major drawcard, increasing customer loyalty.

By 1911 Sidney had bought the long established drapery business Wright and Neil in Bourke St, Melbourne. After purchasing a number of the adjoining properties, he established a department store on the site, which he called The Myer Emporium. This store continues to trade today as the flagship in the Myer department store chain.

1910 - 1920

The Myer Emporium captured the imagination of modern women, catering not only for the wealthy, but customers of all walks of life. Sidney Myer was years ahead of other retailers in offering visually appealing merchandise set in an exciting shopping environment. As the business grew in patronage, Myer brought innovative marketing and sales campaigns to his customers. The increasing demand for new merchandise led to the opening of the first Myer factories in 1915.

1920 - 1930

By the 1920s the Myer Emporium had rapidly become a focal point of Melbourne. While the following years would see the world plunge into economic depression, the Emporium would emerge triumphant and Sidney Myer would become a local hero through his selfless acts of generosity. In 1928 Myer opened its first interstate store in Adelaide, embracing the spirit of enterprise.

1930 - 1939

Throughout the 1930s, the Myer Emporium continued to grow in size and stature, refining its focus on fashion. Sidney Myer's philanthropy also deepened, never more obvious than in the heights of the Great Depression. Myer led the way with the Buy Australian Campaign in 1931, keeping manufacturing jobs in Australia. Earlier in 1929, Myer provided funds for the first open air concerts performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, establishing a legacy, which endures to this day. With his tragic death in 1934, the people of Melbourne were left to mourn a man who had given so much to the local community and changed retailing in this country forever.

1939 - 1945

In 1939 Australia went to war. New "Chief" of the Myer Emporium, Norman Myer, immediately offered the entire facilities and resources of the business to be at the disposal of the government. The Myer Woollen Mills at Ballarat became a major supplier of clothing for the military. US forces occupied Myer's Carlton dispatch facility and Melbourne Lonsdale Street building in the early 1940s. Team members too joined the war effort, enlisting in active service. Norman Myer formed the Dug Out Club, which provided food and entertainment for more than 50,000 allied servicemen a week. One hundred and fifty Myer volunteers acted as dancing partners and hostesses staffing the club.

1985 - 2005

In 1985 the $1.07 billion merger of Coles and Myer was the largest deal in Australian corporate history, making front-page news nationwide. By 1987, the Coles Myer group was recognised as a market leader on the Australian business landscape.

Under Coles, the Myer business continued to diversify, introducing diffusion stores Myer Sport, Myer Electric, Myer Home, Myer BIB, Megamart and Good Buy Warehouse. While these stores were potentially profitable exercises, they were hampered by a lack of adequate resources.

Throughout the nineties and into the new millennium, Myer introduced strategies to bring customers back in store – Myer exclusive brands, the MYER one loyalty program and new marketing campaigns made Myer relevant to a new generation of Australian consumers.

2006 - 2014

In 2009, Myer was floated on the Australian Securities Exhange (ASX). In the years following, Myer has focused on developing their strategy by focusing on the key areas of improving customer service, enhancing their merchandise offer, strengthening their loyalty offer, building a leading omni-channel offer and optimising their store network.

2014 - Today

Myer continues to evolve their strategy to ensure they are well placed to respond to the competitive and increasingly global retail environment and meet changing customer preferences.

In 2014, Myer revealed their new brand, 'find wonderful', to show customers they understand what they are looking for and to bring the love of shopping to life.

With approximately 67 stores located in prime retail locations across Australia, 13,000 team members, an engaged and loyal customer base, and complementary e-commerce, digital and mobile platforms, they are well placed to build on their position as a leading department store group.
