Share

Purchasing shares in a company buys you part ownership of that company. You're given the right to vote on who manages the company and receive a portion of company profits through the distribution of dividends.

Example: If a share price quote is $25, then that means one share is valued at $25.

Note: Shares are also referred to as stocks, equities and securities.

CFD

Is an abbreviation for "Contract for Difference". A CFD is a 'derivative' that is derived from the underlying value of the share price. A CFD’s allow you to go long (buy the CFD) or go short (sell the CFD).

CFD's give you leverage.

Example: Buying a CFD in XYZ provides you with an opportunity to purchase the shares at a variable rates such as 10 to 1 ratio instead of the full upfront share value cost i.e. paying $1,000 instead of $10,000.

Because CFDs are traded on margin, you must maintain the minimum margin level at all times.

Note: CFD’s are not recommended for novice traders.

Agriculture

New Hope believes that mining and agriculture can exist together and are demonstrating this at New Acland where mine buffer zones are farmed and rehabilitated mine areas are returned to grazing.

Acland Pastoral Company (APC), established in 2006, is a farming, grazing and land management enterprise based at New Acland. The company oversees 10,000 hectares of land, including grazing 2,000 head of cattle, and manages 2,400 hectares of crops, which are primarily sold in the Darling Downs region. The business continues to investigate new crop types.

Rehabilitation

The company manages the progressive rehabilitation program that forms a central aspect to the sustainability plan for New Acland. At any one time, only 10% of lease area is actively mined. More than 300 hectares of land have been rehabilitated and returned to cattle grazing land. This ensures that mined land converts back to productive agricultural uses as well as conservation areas. As a member of AgForce Queensland, the peak organisation representing Queensland's rural producers, APC is committed to best practice agricultural and land management operations.

Cattle Grazing Trials

Through APC, two exciting initiatives are in progress. The first is a scientifically-controlled cattle grazing trial monitored in conjunction with leading independent livestock consultants and a local university. The trial involves grazing two mobs of cattle – one on rehabilitated mining land at New Acland and one on a non-mined paddock comparable in feed quantity and quality. Stage 1 results indicate that rehabilitated mining land has the potential to be as, or more, productive than non-mined land.

While it is early days for the trial, it offers positive potential for the mining industry more broadly. Further third party supervised trials are scheduled for 2014; in order to verify the viability of rehabilitated land and optimise rehabilitation practice. The second initiative is with Greening Australia. This is focused on local tree species planting to revegetate the area with native and local species. It includes areas set aside for protected species relocation.

Through APC, contributing to Queensland's agricultural sector is an important and long-term part of New Hope's operations. It shares the same ethos as New Hope in emphasising local employment and use of local services and contractors to maximise the benefits for the region.

Mineral Exploration

New Hope is diversifying beyond coal mining and coal exploration and currently has a number of mineral exploration permits granted or under application. The company continues to investigate other prospective open ground for new tenure.

The focus of these greenfield exploration programs is northern Queensland. Targets have been defined and drilling has commenced. This is designed to extend New Hope's operations, in particular to create opportunities outside of coal areas into open-ground minerals tenements.

Innovation

Coal to Liquids

New Hope continues to advance ambitious coal-to-liquids research and development projects – in both direct and indirect coal liquefaction technologies. The ultimate intent is to unlock new production avenues to create high value carbon products and fuels.

They aim to create high value carbon products and fuels.

New Hope has worked towards developing a detailed engineering design for a Proof of Concept (POC) plant using the direct coal liquefaction technology of Quantex Energy Inc.

Trials use the environmentally superior coal from New Acland; with the whole initiative delivered via an exclusive, worldwide, licensed technology. The process is similar to a closed loop system with coal diluent recycled without CO2 gas production. The pitch product can then be exported or upgraded by alternative technologies to produce outputs such as synthetic crude oil and synthetic metallurgical coke. Diesel production from the liquids is also being evaluated. Commissioning of the 1 tonne per day POC plant is underway in the USA.

They are also advancing research into indirect coal liquefaction technology with the process created by American Renewable Energy Inc. The prime purpose of this process is to produce diesel and jet fuel as well as minor electricity generation. The manufacture of a 1 tonne per hour POC coal-to-liquids indirect gasification plant is well advanced in the USA. The pyrolysis gasifiers are onsite at Jeebropilly mine and showing good performance during pre-commissioning trials. Civil work at the plant location at the mine is well advanced.

Projects

Coal

Total clean coal production from these operations in 2012 was 6.29 million tonnes. More than 90% is directly sold to export markets, predominantly in the Asia Pacific region. The remainder is sold domestically to general industry processors and manufacturers.

They export Tivoli brand coal, which produces low nitrous oxides and carbon dioxide emissions and has low sulphur content, making it one of Australia's cleanest burning coals. Coal mined and sold by New Hope is recognised by independent experts as being one of the lowest greenhouse gas producing coals in the world. This superior environmental performance provides an added strength as environmental management becomes increasingly critical.

Their objective is to increase Australian production through existing resource development, new resource exploration and acquisitions. To this end, our current mining operations are complemented by investment in an extensive exploration program. Our competitive advantage is anchored in our ability to manage each step in the coal chain, from exploration and mining through to delivery for our customers via our port operations.

Subsidaries

Bridgepoint Energy

Bridgeport Energy is a public, unlisted Australian company, established to acquire and develop oil and gas assets in Australasia and other international locations. In 2012, New Hope acquired 100% ownership of Bridgeport.

Bridgeport currently has oil projects and exploration permits based in the Eromanga Basin of south west Queensland and two onshore exploration permits in the Otway Basin of south western Victoria. The company operates two producing fields and has a close alliance with a drilling contractor that allows the cost effective drilling of development wells.

The company is equipped to capitalise on opportunities in the oil and gas industry as it shares New Hope's end-to-end supply chain philosophy. Bridgeport operates in all the capacities of an oil and gas company – seismic and drilling, through to project development and production – which places it among a limited number of oil companies in Australasia with this capability.

While production is currently small (about 6,000 barrels per month), New Hope intends to expand these activities where appropriate.

Queensland Bulk Handling

Queensland Bulk Handling (QBH) is a separate venture located at the Port of Brisbane. It is a multi-user facility with the capacity to export 10 million tonnes per annum of coal and is Brisbane's leading coal export terminal. It has an international reputation as one of the nation's most reliable, efficient and quality assured facilities. In 2012, it exported a record 8.67 million tonnes – a 33% increase on past performance.

QBH is a long-standing member of the community and a business success story for South East Queensland. In 2013, QBH celebrated 30 years of operation.

The state-of-the-art loading systems, and port management that offers 24/7 readiness, support fast turnaround for vessels without significant queuing. This rapid dispatch minimises vessel downtime and reduces shipping costs. QBH's ship loading system can load in excess of 48,000 tonnes per day and is essentially a demurrage free port. World-class port security measures protect sales to markets that are sensitive to commercial terrorism.

All coal managed by QBH is transported by Queensland Rail. Unit trains carrying 1,900 tonnes of coal can typically be unloaded and stockpiled within one hour. The facility offers superior flexibility through its eight discrete stockpiles with total storage capacity of 909,000 tonnes. The team can assemble several cargoes simultaneously and offer services including coal blending, stockpiling, loading and independent quality testing and sampling.

The terminal has been loading coal for New Hope and other producers as a common user facility since 1983 and is a critical element of New Hope's export coal chain strategy.

New Acland Coal Pty Ltd

The New Acland Coal Mine, owned and managed by New Acland Coal Pty Ltd, a New Hope Group company, has played a key role in the Darling Downs region as an employer and economic contributor since it began operation in October 2002.

The New Acland Mine is a major economic contributor to the region, providing a $300 million injection annually into south-east Queensland's economy and $110 million each year to the Darling Downs. The operation employs more than 300 local people directly, and provides a further 160 full-time contractor jobs and 2,300 indirect jobs.

New Acland is located on freehold land acquired through offers to and from landowners affected by rural adjustment and declining productivity. Coal mining has been a significant contributor to the Acland region since 1913, providing not only employment but economic advancement and stability.
