General Overview

About Phoslock Water Solutions Limited

PHKPhoslock is an environmentally-friendly tool in algae management. It was developed in Australia by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

Phoslock is a natural product which starves algae of phosphate, thereby preventing its growth. Unlike many other treatments for blue-green algae, no chemicals are used.

It works by locking away the phosphate present in the water body, permanently preventing its re-release for use by algae. It is a simple solution which has fast, effective and proven results.

The product Phoslock was developed over 8 years of research undertaken by scientists at the Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Land and Water Division (L&W) and funded jointly by the Western Australian State Government's Water and Rivers Commission and the Swan River Trust.

The joint project was initially driven by a desire to identify and develop control measures that could be used in the Swan and Canning Rivers (located in the greater Perth region, Western Australia) to reduce the availability of nutrients (e.g. phosphorus) derived from river sediments. The release of the nutrients into overlying waters has been identified as a key factor in triggering algal blooms.

The research was initiated in late 1994 and commenced with a detailed literature review of available remediation materials, followed by laboratory screening of a selected number of materials. Among the materials which were screened, a modified clay demonstrated the greatest potential for phosphate removal and further laboratory trials were conducted to characterize the features and performance of this modified clay under a variety of water conditions.

Following the completion of laboratory trials, CSIRO applied for a patent on the modified clay that had been developed and registered the trademark "Phoslock".

CSIRO filed International Patent Application PCT/AU97/00892 with the World Intellectual Property Organisation in December, 1997.

A large scale trial of Phoslock in the Canning River was implemented by the Swan River Trust, the Water and Rivers Commission and CSIRO Land and Water in January 2000 as part of the Swan-Canning Cleanup Programme. The main objective of this trial was to determine whether the application of Phoslock would significantly reduce the bio-availability of phosphate in the water column and in sediment pore water of the Canning River.

Case Studies
Laguna Niguel Lake, USA

A 51 tonne application of Phoslock was applied to Laguna Niguel Lake and was carried out over 4 days in April/May 2013. Laguna Niguel Lake (Sulfur Creek Reservoir) is primarily used for scenic recreation and local fishing; however it also is an important sanctuary for waterfowl. Recent issues with surface cyanobacteria scums, foul odours, declining fishery and outbreaks of avian botulism prompted the need for water quality management.

Lake Lorene, USA

Lake Lorene is an 8 acre lake located in Federal Way, Washington. The primary concern with the lake was the hyper-eutrophic status (phosphorus pollution), the potential for health impacts (cyano toxins) and death of fish and wildlife if cyanobacteria blooms continued to persist. The lake is bordered by a housing estate and parklands and has suffered from poor water quality due to toxic algae blooms primarily caused by excess phosphorus levels (TP >100ppb). High phosphorus levels are directly attributed to urban runoff from fertilized parks and gardens.

Serpentine, UK

The Serpentine is one of the most famous water bodies in the UK and a London landmark. Located within Hyde Park - (the Long Water is located in Kensington Gardens), the 16 ha lake is a popular venue for millions of visitors each year for swimming, rowing and recreational boating. The Serpentine receives phosphorus inputs from many sources.

Round Pond, UK

London. The lake adjoins Kensington Palace, which has been a residence of the British Royal Family since the 17th century, and is also home to the official London residence of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Palace was also the former official residence of Diana, Princess of Wales from 1981 until her death in 1997.

Whitehall “Creepy" Pond, USA

Whitehall “Creepy" Pond has historically had issues with its water quality and noxious algal weeds. An application of Phoslock and the algaecide Captain XTR was used to treat the pond with the aim of restoring the water quality, reducing the frequency of toxic algal blooms, and mats of liverwort and filamentous algae.

Narrows Lakes, Australia

PHKThe Narrows Lakes Interchange is a series of lakes located next to Mitchell Freeway and to the south of the CBD of Perth, WA. The City of Perth manages the Narrows Interchange area as parkland for passive recreation and tourism purposes and water from one of the lakes is used to irrigate the parkland. The Lakes frequently experience algal blooms. The primary cause of these blooms is excessive levels of nutrients, particularly soluble phosphorus.

Emu Lake, Australia

Emu Lake was constructed from a natural swamp located in Ballajura in the City of Swan, Western Australia. It covers an area of approximately 10.5 hectares and is fed by stormwater runoff and groundwater from the Gnangara mound. Since its construction in 1980, the water quality in the lake has deteriorated with blue green algal blooms (particularly the toxic form of cyanobacteria) becoming more dominant in recent years.

Eichbaumsee, Germany

Eichbaumsee is a 24 hectare recreational lake in the Hamburg suburb of Bergedorf in Germany, which had been permanently closed for recreational use in the three years prior to the application due to continuous blooms of toxic algae (mainly Microcystis and Aphinozomenon). Previous measures undertaken in order to to solve this problem, including an application of 115 tonnes aluminium sulphate, destratification and deep water aeration, were unsuccesful.

Tianjin Airport Canals, China

The Tianjin Airport Logistics site is approximately 2.5 km from Tianjin Airport (and south east of Beijing). The site is made up of an integrated system of man-made canals, owned by the Tianjin Airport Corporation. The canals serve several purposes with managed storm water control, treated waste water routing by local industry and flood mitigation. Due to nutrient loads in inflow water and deposition of sediment containing high levels of phosphorus, there were problems with water quality in the canals giving rise to odours and seasonal cyanobacteria outbreaks.

Flemington Loch, Scotland

Loch Flemington is a high alkalinity, eutrophic loch located near the city of Inverness in Scotland. The loch has a surface area of approximately 15 hectares and is very shallow, with a mean depth of only 0.75m and a maximum depth of 2.35m.

Behlendorfersee, Germany

The largest application of Phoslock to date took place on the 63 hectare Behlendorfersee near the town of Ratzeburg in Northern Germany in December 2009, shortly before the entire lake froze for the winter. The application was undertaken by Bentophos GmbH.

Blankensee, Germany

The application of Phoslock to the Blankensee was undertaken by the Phoslock licensee for Germany, Bentophos GmbH, in December 2009. The project, which involved the application of 66 tonnes of Phoslock to the lake, was jointly funded by the Federal State of Schleswig Holstein and the City of Lübeck.

Silbersee, Germany

The Silbersee is a 7 hectare recreational lake near the German city of Bremen which was treated with 21.5 tonnes of Phoslock in November 2006. The lake was one of the first lakes in Germany to be treated with Phoslock and consequently is one of the earliest European case studies.

De Kuil, Netherlands

Zwemplas De Kuil at Prinsenbeek is a former sand excavation pit which is currently used for recreation by swimmers and anglers. The lake has an area of approximately 7 ha and an average depth around 4 m. The lake has a history of blue green algae blooms and was treated as part of a Dutch Government study project undertaken under the auspices of the EU “Water Framework Directive Innovation Program".

Het Groene Eiland, Germany

The lake at the “Het Groene Eiland" camping park near the town of Appeltern in the Netherlands was treated with eleven tonnes of Phoslock on the 16th and 17th of April 2008. A second application of 3.1 tons were applied on the 31st of March 2009 to bind phosphorus unaccounted for in the first application.

Clatto Reservoir, Scotland

Clatto Reservoir is a 9 hectare, former drinking water supply reservoir located on the outskirts of the city of Dundee in Scotland. In recent years, the reservoir has been used for a variety of recreational purposes, however blue green algal blooms during summer months have become more common, causing the reservoir to be closed for extended periods of time due to concerns about public health and safety.

Lago di Varese, Italy

In-lake trials with Phoslock commenced in Lake Varese in Northern Italy in February 2009. The 14 km2 lake, which is situated between Lakes Como and Maggiore, has well known eutrophication issues caused by elevated levels of phosphorus and the Provincial Government is committed to improving its ecological condition. The decision to proceed to in-lake trials was made following several years of laboratory testing of Phoslock within the Province. The aim of the trials is to demonstrate the effectiveness of Phoslock in reducing phosphorus levels in the lake while ensuring that an application of Phoslock to the lake will not have a negative effect on the lake's ecosystem.

De Rauwbraken, Netherlands

Located near Tilburg in the Netherlands, De Rauwbraken is a manmade recreational lake, which is popular among swimmers and divers. It was created in 1967 by sand excavation and has a total surface area of approximately 4 hectares.

Torrens Lake, Australia

Torrens Lake is an impounded section of the Torrens River, a meandering river running through the centre of the city of Adelaide in the Australian State of South Australia. The lake was treated with 50 tonnes of Phoslock in March 2007 and a further 12 tonnes of Phoslock in February 2008. The purpose of the treatments was to reduce the potential for the development of blue green algal blooms that might have threatened scheduled events of the “Adelaide Festival", a major festival held in the city during February and March. Blue green algal blooms had resulted in the closure of the lake to recreational use in seven of the ten years prior to the Phoslock application.

Bärensee, Germany

The Bärensee is a popular lake used for swimming and fishing which is located within the largest camping area in the Federal German State of Hessen . It is a shallow lake with an average depth of 2.63m, a surface area of 6 ha and a water volume of 156,000 m³.

Australian Drinking Water Reservoir

Located in New South Wales, Australia, the Drinking Water Reservoir was constructed in the mid 1980's to supply drinking water to the southern parts of NSW. It has a surface area of approximately 55 hectares and a total water volume around 4,900 ML. The reservoir receives its inflow from rivers that drain from catchment areas covering a total of approximately 112,000 hectares.

Otterstedtersee, Germany

The Otterstedtersee is a 4.5 ha lake near the city of Bremen in Northern Germany which was treated with 11 tonnes of Phoslock between the 30.10.2006 and the 1.11.2007. The lake is a natural lake with a maximum depth of 11m which was formed approximately 12,000 years ago at the end of the ice age. It is a popular recreational lake for the town of Ottersberg and is surrounded on all sides by cottages built amongst trees.

Lake Okareka, New Zealand

Lake Okareka is a 330 ha lake on the North Island of New Zealand located in a rich dairying region. Between August 2005 and March 2007, three separate applications of Phoslock totalling 60 tonnes were undertaken by Environmental Bay of Plenty, the regional environment authority in an effort to remove 0.1 tonnes of phosphorus from the lake per year for three years. The applications were undertaken over a surface area of 170 hectares, encompassing the deeper basin of the lake approximately within the 20m contour.

Hartbeespoort Dam, South Africa

The Hartbeespoort Dam is located 37 km west of South Africa's capital city, Pretoria and is surrounded by a number of very affluent residential areas. It is classified as hypertrophic and is heavily loaded with nutrients which have entered the dam due to runoff from fertilized fields and the inflow of sewage plant effluents from the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. For most of the year, the dam is dominated by dense populations of cyanobacteria, or blue green algae.

Dianchi Lake, China

Dianchi Lake is located in Kunming, in the Yunnan Province, China. It is the largest freshwater lake in the Yunnan Province and the 6th largest lake in China. The Lake is about 360 km² in size and has been plagued by blue-green algae outbreaks since the 1970's. Dianchi Lake is the main water source for industry and agriculture in Kunming and prior to the algae blooms, it made up 40% of Kunming's drinking water supply. Most of the nutrient entering the lake is from industrial sewerage discharged by more than 250 factories on the shore and from domestic sewage with fertilizers and pesticides flowing into the lake via 16 rivers.

Canning and Vasse River, Australia

The applications of Phoslock on impounded sections of the Canning and Vasse Rivers in 2000 / 2001 by the Western Australian Water and Rivers Commission, the Swan River Trust and CSIRO Land and Water were the first full scale applications of Phoslock and were undertaken as trials during the development of Phoslock to determine whether the application of Phoslock could significantly reduce the bio-availability of phosphorus in the water column and sediments of these rivers.

Aquaculture

PHKAquaculture species require optimal water quality to survive, remain healthy and grow. Therefore the success or failure of an aquaculture operation is dependant upon water quality management. The key to successful aquaculture maintenance lies in the aquaculture farmers' ability to regulate algae and prevent blue green algal blooms.

Performance declines once blue-green algae develop and excessive algal growth occurs.

Blue-Green Algae Prevention: A Challenge Faced By Aquaculture Farmers

Large amounts of fish or prawn stock are necessary for profitable commercial aquaculture. As a result ponds receive large levels of nutrient inputs from uneaten feeds and excretion. Phosphorous makes up a large portion of nutrients. Whilst nutrients are necessary to maintain suitable water conditions for aquaculture species, high levels can lead to the growth of harmful algae.

This has serious ecological, aesthetic and financial implications.
