Standard Alloys for Outstanding Solutions

Magontec employs two processes in standard alloy production:

First, based on pure magnesium as primary alloy and second, through re-melting of recyclable material as secondary alloy. Production of both is shared between their plants in Europe and China.

AZ 91

The alloy AZ 91 combines outstading casting properties with high tensile strength. It is highly suited to:

AM 50/AM 60

The alloys AM 50 and AM 60 have exceptional elongation, tensile strength and energy absorption properties. Their good castability makes them hightly versatile in application.

Special Alloys

Magnotec caters for theircustomers' specific needs with a wide range of special alloys.

These include:

High Pressure Die Casting Alloys
  • AE 44:AE 44 is a rare earth and aluminium containing alloy for high temperature applications with excellend castability and ductility. It is available in two versions:
    • AE44-4 contains varieties of rare earths
    • AE44-2 contains only the plentiful and low cost rare earths: cerium and lanthanum
  • AJ 62:Magnesium - aluminium - strontium allowys for moderate temperature applications.
  • AS 31:AS 31 is an alloy with good creeping properties and mechanical characteristics. It is often used in engine components.
  • ZA 126:ZA 126 is the successor to HyMag2 and AM-lite alloys for applications requiring high surface definition and electroplatability. ZA126 is only for decorative - non structural applications.
Gravity Cast Alloy
  • SC1: Magnesium rare earth alloy suitable for high temperature applications including engine blocks.
Master Alloy
  • MicroZir™: A magnesium-zirconium master alloy used to introduce zirconium to magnesium allowys for alloying and grain refining. Zirconium is persent as particles in the microns size range for high alloying efficiency and low sludge formation.
Extrusion Alloys
  • EX1:Extrusion alloy combining high extrusion speeds, low cost, high ductility and closeness of tensiel and compressive properties.
  • AZ 31:Most widely used magnesium extrusion alloy.

Cathodic Corrosion Protection

HyTonic® Anodes and Correx® Impressed Current Systems are leading product lines for protecting water storage heaters. Extensive applied research and customer-specific developments have made Magontec a valued partner of the household appliance industry – worldwide.

Alloying, Casting, Finishing

The quality of the alloy makes a critical difference. For example the million fold reproduction of product safety and health protection as found in their HyTonic® anodes in water storage heaters.

Only by total control of the processes employed, can the lead be taken in safety and product performance. Magontec has been investing for decades in technical know-how, which concerning the accuracy of electrochemical processes and industrial production procedures, has become second to none.

Magontec controls all processes from the start. Various casting processes and techniques serve the purpose of implementing the properties of a product as the application-specific conditions dictate. For further processing and finishing, a wide variety of possibilities exist which correspond to the requirements of the household environment regarding dimensions, functions and various types of mounting.

The product range of cathodic corrosion protection consists of:

  • HyTonic® Anodes
  • Correx® Impressed Current Systems
  • CorroScout® Measuring Systems
HyTonic® Anodes

HyTonic® Anodes use a protective current to prevent corrosion in water storage heaters. Even a perfect enamel coating leaves minute parts unprotected which added together represent a dangerous corrosion potential.

Active Corrosion Prevention

HyTonic® Anodes work in three ways:

  • Primary effect: Potential reduction by electrochemical polarisation.
  • Secondary effect: Support of protective coating formation.
  • Tertiary effect: Reduction of oxygen.

HyTonic® Anodes are based on Mg AZ 63, both cast and extruded in diverse variations. This guarantees optimal sizing even where unusual dimensions are called for. The physiological harmlessness of the alloy is the deciding factor regarding employment of HyTonic® Sacrificial Anodes. This is critical in most regions of the world.

Today, hundreds of millions of applications prove the perfect interplay between the high purity alloys of HyTonic® Sacrificial Anodes and the multitude of different enamel coatings of water storage heaters.

HyTonic® CMag Cast Anode Rods

Cast anode rods are used for safe corrosion protection of water storage heaters. HyTonic® Anodes have proven themselves a million times over as being long-lived and hygienic.

Types Available:

  • 18 mm, length 80 – 800 mm
  • 21.3 mm, length 80 – 1.000 mm
  • 25.5 mm, length 80 – 1.500 mm
  • 26 mm, length 80 – 1.500 mm
  • 33 mm, length 80 – 1.500 mm
  • 40 mm, length over 80 mm

Fitting:

The various installation types of HyTonic® Cast Anode Rods are made for different forms of installation.

  • Hole fitting: The anode rods are fixed with a 30 mm long M8 bolt with a sealing disc. A seal is laid on the disc, the anode passed through a hole, for example in a flange, and bolted up outside. HyTonic® Cast Anode Rods are fitted either insulated or non-insulated.
  • Socket fitting: Fitting is via threaded socket of ¾", 1", or 1¼" to ISO 228 or according to American NPT screw fixing. The anodes are made for easy fitting and supplied with a PTFE sealing ring. Socket fitting HyTonic® anodes can also be supplied insulated or non-insulated. For retro-fitting, additional fitting kits are available for the sizes already mentioned.
HyTonic® ExMag Extruded Anode Rods

Extruded anode rods are used for corrosion protection of water storage heaters where especially long anodes are required. Extruded anode rods have a steel wire core, 3.4 mm in diameter.

Available Types:

  • 21.3 mm, length max. 5750 mm
  • 26 mm, length max. 5750 mm
  • 33 mm, length max. 5750 mm

Fitting:

The various installation types of HyTonic® Extruded Anode Rods are made for different forms of installation.

  • Socket fitting: Fitting is via threaded socket of ¾", 1", or 1¼" to ISO 228 or according to American NPT screw fixing. The anodes are made for easy fitting and supplied with a PTFE sealing ring.
  • Anodes with extended wire: For direct welding into a tank or tank components, the wire extends from either one or both ends.
HyTonic® Chain Anodes

Magnesium chain anodes are used for corrosion protection of water storage heaters. They are ideal for retrofitting to storage tanks under low ceilings.

They are available with a plug screw for socket fitting or an M8 bolt for hole fitting. A special water drainage device is available.

The individual chain links are cast onto a flexible braided steel wire of 3 mm diameter. Standard diameters for the chain links are 22 mm and 33 mm. The number of links is as required, depending on the surface or the height of the storage tank.

HyTonic® Compact Anodes

HyTonic® Magnesium Compact Anodes are favoured for internal protection of condensators, coolers and water cooling systems. Various customer-specific machining processes are employed to ensure that the HyTonic® Compact Anodes meet the requirements of the application. They are available in round or square forms, with or without insert.

Fitting:

Magnesium compact anodes are available with or without insert. Typical insert forms are bolts, flat steel bar and pipe. Further variations are available.

HyTonic® Ground Anodes

HyTonic® Ground Anodes are for protection of ground laid tanks, containers and pipes. They have a magnesium weight of between 2 and 50 kg. HyTonic® Ground Anodes have a steel core.

  • Pipes: long distance pipes for oil, gas and water, pipe networks
  • Culverts: long distance pipes for oil, gas and water, waste water pipes
  • Harbours: sheet pile walls, piles, jetties, piers

Customer's specific wishes regarding the dimensions of HyTonic® Ground Anodes are individually accommodated.

To compensate for seasonal variations in specific ground resistance, HyTonic® Ground Anodes are available as backfill types upon request.

HyTonic® Installation Equipment

vHyTonic® offers a comprehensive accessory range. Professional materials are available for all fitting requirements. Assembly is both quick and precise.

Kits are available for retrofit applications.

Correx® Impressed Current Systems

Correx® impressed current systems feed a continuous protective electric current for warm water tanks. In particular, the combination of solar energy systems, heat pumps or combined heat and power plants with warm water generation all profit from electronically regulated protective current. Correx® Impressed Current Systems can reliably indicate any system failure. They reduce maintenance to a minimum.

High-Tech for Modern Water Storage Heaters:

The system consists of two central components; the Correx® potentiostat and the Correx® titanium anode with mixed oxide coating. They are connected by cable and powered via mains cable. Fitting is exceptionally easy, by the same method as the magnesium anodes.

Types and Applications:

There are three types available: Correx® UP, Correx® MP, Correx® OP.

The differences are mainly in the nominal current strength, between 50 and 180 mA.

The various models are adapted to suit the requirements of the user. For OEM use, circuit boards and built-in potentiostats are used, plug-in potentiostats are used for retro-fitments.

The titanium anodes have a mixed oxide coating. They are between 50 and 1200 mm long and can be fitted in pairs for increased effectiveness. Large storage tanks are protected by several systems. For retrofitting, Correx® is supplied with comprehensive fitting equipment. Correx® protects tanks with volumes of between 50 and 5000 litres safely and conveniently.

Impressed Current Systems Correx® UP

Correx® UP works on the principle of the interrupter potentiostat. The protective current is fed via a titanium anode. It is periodically interrupted at short intervals, whereby the potential between the titanium anode and the inside tank wall is measured and the value sent to the potentiostat. This is then compared to the nominal voltage set within the system. The protective current is adjusted so that the tank potential is exactly equal to the nominal voltage.

The titanium anodes are feed and reference electrodes with noble metal mixed oxide coating. They work as reference electrodes for measuring the working voltage in the tank when the current is interrupted. During the current feed phase they implement the more or less wear free current feed. Diameters are 2 mm and 3 mm, lengths are from 200 mm to 800 mm. Correx® UP is completely unproblematic to retrofit and is supplied for socket type fitting and insulated hole fitting.

  • Correx® UP 2.3-919: Ideal for enamelled water storage heaters over 300 l, for solar tanks and for tanks with higher protective current requirements.
  • Correx® UP 1.9-924: Ideal for water storage heaters made of stainless steel up to 400 l in unusual operating environments and for smaller tanks with higher protective current requirements.
Impressed Current Systems Correx® MP

Correx® MP works on the principle of the interrupter potentiostat. The protective current is fed via a titanium anode. Impressed Current Systems Correx® OP

The Correx® OP series are designed for use as OEM components. The product characteristics are tailored according to individual requirements. Correx® OP is employed by leading manufacturers worldwide.

Correx® for Stainless Steel Tanks

Even the safest stainless steel tank can, under certain circumstances, be susceptible to corrosion. It is especially important to take into account the exact working environment of such precision products.

For example contact with strong chlorides over 150 mg/l represents an exceptional operating condition, which is a danger to even stainless steel tanks. In many regions, such concentrations are even reached under normal conditions.

Inappropriate construction methods can also increase the risk of corrosion. Welding seams are often such weak spots.

To be on the safe side, stainless steel water storage heaters should be protected by the electronically controlled protective current of the Correx® Impressed Current Systems.

Anode Tester CorroScout® 500

CorroScout® is a professional anode tester for cathodic corrosion protection.

It provides all the important measurement functions for testing sacrificial anodes of insulated fitting type, and Correx® Impressed Current Systems. Shutting down or opening the tank is no longer necessary! In an attractive, robust housing.

Measurement Functions:

  • Anode Drive Voltage in the ranges of 2 V for magnesium sacrificial anodes and 20 V for Correx® Impressed Current Anodes.
  • Mains Voltage Testing in the ranges of 230 V AC and 115 V AC
  • Internal Resistance of control probes in boilers and tanks with range of up to 20 kO
  • Potential Balance Resistance for water storage heaters with insulated fitting type electrical tubular heating elements, or others with potential balance resistance fitted, non-enamelled flat tube or finned tube heat exchangers.
  • Function Check of reverse polarity protection diodes.
  • Protective Current Discharge in the ranges of 20 mA (regular) and 200 mA.

Solutions Set Standards

By developing and asserting standards, Magontec shows an outstanding tradition.

This applies to helping in the formulation of international standards and the worldwide standard of reference for alloys.

At the product level, the company standards of Magontec by far exceed those set by DIN or EN in many important aspects. This is the case with, for example, the limits of Fe and Ni. As even minimal impurities increase the rate of corrosion, the Magontec standard only permits 50% of that which is allowed by EN 12438.

The Magontec Competence Centre

In the Magontec Competence Centre (CCMag) they test materials and processes under realistic conditions. The highly qualified Magontec specialists draw upon a wide range of experience, from applications in the die-casting industry to cathodic corrosion protection systems.

Magontec uses its CCMag to drive process developments, to test metal qualities and to research alloys. They study the environmental implications and health and safety aspects from the user's point of view and present concrete solutions.

Joint Developments, Individual Service

Comprehensively equipped laboratories are made available for this. They can thereby guarantee their  customers exceptionally high product quality.

This is equally important for the magnesium die casting industry and the water tank industry. Possible quality differences between producers are often difficult to detect, and the consequences can be serious. The high quality of Magontec alloys and products reduces this risk to their customers to a minimum.
